What Is Infinite Flow? Death-Game Novels and Where to Start

Squid Game, except the games never stop. The book that founded the genre is rough going; its danmei heirs are why you read it now.

Verdict: Start with Global Examination. Pick Kaleidoscope of Death if you want real horror, and read Terror Infinity, the 2007 original, only for the history.

What is infinite flow? It's the Chinese web novel genre where ordinary people get pulled out of their lives into a deadly game world, survive it if they can, collect points, and get thrown into the next one. Think Squid Game as a serial that never ends. The name comes straight from 无限流 (wúxiàn liú), and the best of it, for English readers today, is danmei.

If you read one, make it Global Examination. Read Terror Infinity, the book that started the genre, only if you want to see where the machine came from.

What Infinite Flow Actually Means

Both words are a little odd in English. Liú (流) is the suffix Chinese readers put on a school of storytelling, not a reference to water: JJWXC tags Kaleidoscope of Death with 无限流 and 升级流 side by side, the second one being "leveling flow," the power-climb story. So "flow" really means "type."

Wúxiàn (无限) is "unlimited," which is why some English shelves say "unlimited flow." Lucas, Wuxiaworld's Chinese licensing manager, calls that rendering "incorrect" in a genre guide posted to r/noveltranslations, and argues the name points back to one book, Terror Infinity. A 2021 essay on the China Writers Association's site reads "infinite" more generously, as 包罗万象: a frame that can swallow anything, from myth and history to films, anime and games.

Whatever you call it, every book runs on the same engine:

  • A hub. A space the characters return to between rounds: Terror Infinity's "God's dimension," a corridor of iron doors, a black tower.
  • Instances. Self-contained worlds with their own rules. Early books borrowed them from horror films and games.
  • Rules that kill. Break one and you die, usually on the page.
  • A score. Points, keys or grades that buy power, time and, eventually, a way home.
  • A crowd. Newcomers who die fast, veterans who explain the rules badly.

That last part is what separates infinite flow from its cousin, quick transmigration. The same essay puts it as group versus individual: quick transmigration follows one protagonist through world after world, while infinite flow is an ensemble that has to cooperate (or betray each other) to live.

Where It Came From: Terror Infinity

Infinite flow began on Qidian in 2007 with Terror Infinity (无限恐怖, Wúxiàn Kǒngbù) by zhttty, and the wave of imitators that followed turned it into a named category. Wuxiaworld licensed it from Yuewen, and its English translation is complete.

We read the first two chapters there on October 20, 2026, and they work as a genre manual in story form. Zheng Zha, a bored office worker, gets a pop-up at his desk ("Want to know the meaning of life? Want to live... a real life?"), clicks YES and wakes up in a speeding train carriage with five other newcomers and a scarred veteran who chain-smokes while he explains. They're inside Resident Evil. Survive the film and you earn a base reward in points; 50,000 points buys a ticket home. Wander more than 300 feet from the mercenary leader the story calls One, and you explode. In the next chapter two stragglers on the stairs do exactly that. The veteran says "Two out," and the newcomers hear two bangs from somewhere above them.

The idea has aged better than the prose. The top review on the Wuxiaworld page is marked Not recommended, and it still opens with: "The concept of the novel is amazing and it inspired a lot of other novels out there." A Recommended one warns that you'll either binge it or "want throw your phone at the mc." We'd take that split as the honest price of entry: read it for the blueprint, not for the people.

The early books also had a business problem. If your instance is Resident Evil, your novel is close to impossible to adapt for the screen. The r/noveltranslations writeup argues that once adaptation money boomed in China around 2014, many of the genre's writers moved to xuanhuan and xianxia, and some of those who stayed switched to original instance worlds. The frame survived inside other genres, from danmei death games to Qidian hits like Realm Walker, which the same writeup files as infinity mixed with spiritual revival.

One cheat, one world, and a stat screen instead of a death count: the closest relative, explained.

The labels blur at the edges, and even catalogs slip. DanmeiNews files World Hopping: Avenge Our Love, whose hero is a divorce lawyer bound to "a quick transmigration system," under its Infinite Flow tag. Our rule of thumb: one protagonist fixing other people's stories is quick transmigration, whatever the shelf says. If what you want is one world with game mechanics, the best system novels list covers that side.

Infinite Flow Novels to Read in English

Most of the famous ones are danmei from JJWXC (if the word is new, our danmei primer explains it), and their official English editions come from Rosmei, a Singapore publisher. The catch: Rosmei has mostly bought Singapore-only rights, so readers elsewhere go through import shops such as Yiggybean and The Beguiling, and the price climbs on the way. That's starting to shift. DanmeiNews reported in June 2026 that Aloha Comics holds a US print license for Kaleidoscope of Death, and that Rosmei plans to co-publish most of its titles in the US with Publang.

We haven't read the Rosmei English editions. The Global Examination and Kaleidoscope of Death scenes below come from chapter 1 of each Chinese original, read on JJWXC on October 20, 2026.

Global Examination: Start Here

Chapter one is called 送命题, roughly "the question that gets you killed," and it earns the title. A roomful of strangers sit in a hunting cabin in a blizzard while an old radio crackles "Welcome to Exam Room 003712." One man tried to take it apart. He got the battery box off, bolted into the snow as if possessed, and five minutes later his body slid off the roof with the drift. At six the radio announces the subject: physics. The wall grows a question that starts "A group of travelers came to a snowy mountain..." with a rule underneath: get nothing right in six hours and one examinee is expelled. Our lead, You Huo, wants to know what "expelled" means, so he sticks his hand out the window. His fingers come back bleeding. He tosses a rusty can out after it, and it turns to powder.

That's the whole pitch: a lead who treats a death game like a badly invigilated exam, and Mu Su Li's dry jokes keep the dread from going stale. Rosmei's own blurb calls it "an addictive unlimited flow danmei novel," and the romance runs through Qin Jiu, an invigilator who can't work out who You Huo is. It's the most fun way into the genre. Skip it if a smug, unbeatable lead gets on your nerves: You Huo is that from page one.

Kaleidoscope of Death: The Scary One

Lin Qiushi opens a black iron door in his hallway that shouldn't be there and ends up on a muddy path to a mountain village, next to a tall, weeping girl who walked through the same kind of door in her bathroom. The veterans in the village are cold. That night a woman sits at the head of his bed, speaking in the voice of the girl he's sharing the room with, and asks him to come and look at the well. His answer is the best line in the chapter: he was named an outstanding Party cadre last month, he's a firm materialist, so could she go scare somebody else? Then her neck starts to stretch. Our gong and shou explainer uses this chapter to show how a shou-led novel stays in one character's head.

The swerve between real fear and deadpan comedy is the book's signature. It's the one we'd hand a horror reader, and the one with a screen version: iQIYI adapted it as The Spirealm in 2024. The drama was pulled in China the day it premiered, but it streams internationally on iQIYI and Viki.

The Earth Is Online: The Whole Planet Plays

Here the hub is Earth itself. Black towers appear over cities, and JJWXC's summary lists their three iron laws: all interpretation belongs to the Black Tower, game time runs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and every player must work to climb the tower. The games run on twisted childhood material (the cover of Rosmei's first volume features Wario's Monopoly game). It's also the long one, more than twice the length of Global Examination in the original. Pick it if a global death game appeals more than being yanked into pocket worlds.

Terror Infinity: For the History

Covered above. It's complete, and the opening chapters are free to read on Wuxiaworld without an account. Its own reviewers knock it for plot armor and nationalism, and both show early. We'd stop after the first film if it hasn't clicked.

Thriller Paradise: The Long Horror Run

Of the five, Thriller Paradise leans hardest on the game frame. Feng Bujue lost his ability to feel fear to a psychological disorder and goes looking for it in a virtual-reality horror game, solving scenario after scenario. It's complete on Webnovel, where it holds 4.61 stars from 284 ratings. "It's like... an episodic mystery novel with gaming elements," one early reviewer there wrote. We haven't read it, and purists may call it game lit wearing an infinite flow coat, but it's the longest of the five by chapter count, so it's the one to pick if you want a horror run that lasts all winter.

Already through the death games and still want something finished to binge? These are complete in English.

The One We'd Start With

Global Examination, no contest: the fastest hook, the best jokes, and the clearest view of how the rules work. Go to Kaleidoscope of Death next if the cabin scene made you want more dread, or to The Earth Is Online if you want it bigger. Terror Infinity is homework, interesting homework.

If you've already worked through the Chinese shelf, one r/DanmeiNovels regular points to Korean horror for the same feeling. u/Babyspeech recommended Got Dropped in Ghost Story, Still Gotta Work for its "case-by-case puzzle breaking like infinite flow." And if what you liked was urban horror without the game rounds, our My House of Horrors review is the next stop.
