Is Qiang Jin Jiu Finished? Yes, and What Volume 8 Adds

The waiting is over. If you held off until the last book was out, you can start tonight.

Verdict: Yes. Seven Seas finished Ballad of Sword and Wine with Volume 8 on August 11, 2026, and the Chinese original is complete on JJWXC.

Is Qiang Jin Jiu finished? Yes, in both languages. Seven Seas put out the last volume of Ballad of Sword and Wine this August, so the English run is complete, and the Chinese original wrapped on Jinjiang Literature City (JJWXC) years before Seven Seas started.

Seven Seas covers for Ballad of Sword and Wine volume one, a toast with tilted wine cups, and the volume eight special edition

The original is Tang Jiu Qing's 将进酒 (Qiang Jin Jiu, "QJJ" to fans). If you've been waiting to binge it, the wait is over. The only loose ends are small: a chapter the Chinese site has partly blocked, and a bonus chapter that's exclusive to the English finale.

Is Qiang Jin Jiu Finished in English? Every Volume Is Out

Seven Seas lists the series at eight volumes, each a $19.99 paperback with covers and interior art by St. Volume 1 arrived in June 2024, and a new book followed every three to four months on average until the finale. That's a little over two years from first book to last. Reading order is the volume order; there's no side volume to slot in.

The finale is a little more than a translation of the last chapters. Penguin Random House's listing for Ballad of Sword and Wine Volume 8 says it "contains an exclusive new chapter from Tang Jiu Qing," so English readers get a scene the JJWXC chapter list doesn't have. Both editions carry it; the Special Edition only adds a bookmark, a sticker sheet, a paper standee and four postcards.

That standee didn't win everyone over. On release day, u/tuttutlookslikeraine asked if anyone else "was disappointed by the paper standee in the deluxe edition," and u/cezhou, who started the thread, answered that "the merch was disappointing." Our advice: take the regular edition unless you collect the extras.

Is Qiang Jin Jiu Finished in Chinese? Yes, With One Chapter Trimmed

On JJWXC the novel is marked complete at a little over a million Chinese characters. The chapter list runs in three parts named for lines of verse (我本放逐臣, 又为乱世雄 and 醉倒狂歌中, roughly "I was a banished subject," "then a hero of a broken age," "drunk amid wild song"), and it ends with chapter 282 and no extras section. The first 24 chapters are free; the rest sit behind JJWXC's VIP paywall.

There's one recent hole. A system notice dated August 27, 2026 says paragraphs in chapter 203 have been blocked (段落屏蔽) under national content rules, and the author's blurb warns that chapters showing a revision notice are being unlocked. If you read in English, that's trivia. If you planned to read the original on the site, expect a gap there.

What the First Three Chapters Are Like

We read chapters 1 to 3 of the Chinese original on JJWXC on October 20, 2026, free and signed out. It's a brutal start. Shen Zechuan, fifteen or sixteen, is being interrogated in the capital's prison about his father, the Prince of Jianxing, whose collapse at the Chashi River ended with thirty thousand soldiers buried alive in a sinkhole. Between questions he's back in that pit, under the body of Ji Mu, the teacher's son he calls his brother, who keeps him alive by lying on top of him. Shen promises they'll go home and eat bowls of his teacher's wife's dumplings. Ji Mu says he eats slowly, so don't steal his.

Chapter 2 is a murder attempt. Someone piles sandbags on him in his cell overnight, and he survives by kicking through a worm-eaten bed board. Chapter 3 sentences him to be beaten to death outside the palace, and a woman arriving with the Empress Dowager's word stops it. He still won't say his father was a traitor. The chapter ends with him dragged through the street as heavy cavalry thunders in through the city gate.

Xiao Chiye, the other lead, barely appears by then. It's a political thriller first, and the opening shows you exactly how much grief it will put its hero through before the romance gets going.

Before You Start

Readers who finished it agree on two things. It isn't a slow burn: "They get together pretty fast," as u/Motor_Row_3586 put it to someone about to start. And it asks for attention. u/Thaminii called it "a plot extremely focused on political intrigue, making it a read that demands a lot of concentration and patience." We'd take both at face value: if you want pining, look elsewhere, and if court politics bore you, eight volumes is a long way to go.

For a lot of readers this was the moment they'd been waiting for. u/Sweet_Cabinet2238 said, "I have been desperately waiting for the last book to come to finally start it." u/cezhou summed up the mood among those who'd read along as "both sad(no new content anymore) and happy (fully available to read)."

Our Take

QJJ is finished, so if you were waiting, start with Volume 1. Buy the regular editions, since the bonus chapter is in both, and expect the first book to be grim before it turns into the power-couple story fans talk about. If you'd rather start with something shorter that's also done in English, Thousand Autumns is five volumes; see whether Thousand Autumns is finished. Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou's Erha is complete too (where Erha stands in English), while her Case File Compendium still has one book to go (when its last volume lands).
