The best danmei novels for binge reading are the ones whose last English volume you can already buy, and three Mo Xiang Tong Xiu series pass that test without an asterisk. Pick by how much time you have and how much you want to laugh: The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System is the short, funny one, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation is the mystery, and Heaven Official's Blessing is the epic you plan a holiday around. How to Pick the Best Danmei Novels for a Binge

Danmei is Chinese fiction about romance between men, and most of it "first emerged online in the late 1990s" as web serials. A finished serial in Chinese doesn't mean a finished book in English; Case File Compendium is the current example, finished in Chinese but not yet in English. So the rule here is simple: the publisher's series page has to show the final volume already out. Seven Seas prints a "Series Length" line and a date for every volume, which makes the check take a minute. Why tone matters as much as length: anotherfanofdogs, asking r/DanmeiNovels for funny licensed danmei, explained they were "trying to go through all the licensed and completed novels" and stalled on another author's book: "I'm a third into the first book but I'm starting to get bored". What they missed was the "great balance of story, romance, and comedy" they'd found in Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. A binge dies in the middle volumes, not the first chapter, so we ranked these by how easy each is to keep going.

1. The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System: Start Here

Pick it if you want a weekend binge; skip it if parody of web-novel clichés isn't your humour. It's the shortest of the three and the only one Seven Seas tags as Comedy. Shen Yuan, a reader who posts as "Peerless Cucumber", dies and is "reborn into the world of the web novel, in the body of Shen Qingqiu", the cruel teacher who is "destined to be horrifically punished for crimes against the protagonist". His survival plan is to get on the good side of that protagonist, Luo Binghe, which goes about as smoothly as you'd hope. Seven Seas' own one-liner is "a man reborn as a villain in a fantasy novel series who ends up romancing the male protagonist", and four volumes is a length you can finish before the joke wears thin.

2. Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: The Mystery

Pick it if you came from The Untamed; skip it if timeline jumps annoy you. Five volumes, and the book behind the live-action drama. Wei Wuxian's "death was celebrated throughout the land", and years later he "awakens in the body of an aggrieved young man who sacrifices his soul so that Wei Wuxian can exact revenge on his behalf". Lan Wangji joins him, and their "shared memories of their past" keep pulling the present-day investigation backwards, so it reads best in long sittings rather than a volume a month. 3. Heaven Official's Blessing: The Long Haul

Pick it when you have weeks, not a weekend; skip it if you need the romance to land early. It's eight volumes, twice the length of Scum Villain. Xie Lian was a crown prince turned god who was "cast from the Heavens again and again"; "Eight hundred years after his mortal life" he ascends a third time and works as "a lowly scrap collector" until he meets "a mysterious young man with whom he feels an instant connection". It's the biggest commitment on this list, so start it when you know you can keep going rather than in a gap between other books.

Before You Buy the Best Danmei Novels: Editions

All three are finished in paperback, and all three now have a deluxe hardcover option. Seven Seas lists a Deluxe Hardcover run of Heaven Official's Blessing from Dec 3, 2024 to Jan 27, 2026 and one of Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation from Nov 4, 2025 to May 26, 2026, both now complete. Scum Villain got a Deluxe Hardcover box set on Feb 17, 2026, at $139.99. Mixing paperbacks and hardcovers is fine for reading and annoying on a shelf, so pick one format before the first order.

Thrice Married is the newest finish: its last volume came out the day we added it here. If you want something short between two long reads, take Guardian or Thrice Married.
