Best Modern Danmei Novels in English: Silent Reading First

Silent Reading is the one to start with. Guardian is the one you can finish this week. Case File Compendium is the one to think twice about.

11 min readLast reviewed By Mei-Lin Zhao

Verdict: Start with Silent Reading if you like crime fiction, take Guardian if you want a finished series, and pick Run Wild for a quiet one. Go into Case File Compendium and The Lucky Egg Game knowing they're dark and graphic.

Of the best modern danmei novels in English, read Silent Reading first if you like crime fiction. If you want one you can finish this week, take Guardian. Pick Run Wild for a quiet one about two teenagers, and go into Case File Compendium and The Lucky Egg Game only if you're fine with dark, graphic material. All seven picks are Seven Seas books set in the present day, not in a dynasty or a cultivation world.

On October 13, 2026 we read the free first chapter of six of these novels in the original Chinese on Jinjiang Literature City (JJWXC), where they were first serialized. The notes on how each one opens come from that reading. We couldn't find an official free copy of the seventh, Riverbay Road Men's Dormitory, so that pick is based on the publisher's description alone.

How We Picked the Best Modern Danmei Novels

A series made the list if Seven Seas' own blurb sets it in today's world and Vol. 1 is out or dated by October 2026. "Modern" here means phones, police bureaus, schools and rented rooms. Near-future science fiction like Little Mushroom is left out, because its blurb places it "In a future Earth ravaged by radiation".

The order is by what you want to read, not a score. Seven Seas publishes no ratings and we didn't invent any. For the historical side of the genre, see our best danmei novels licensed in English; if the word itself is new to you, start with what danmei means.

1. Silent Reading: Mo Du: Best Modern Danmei for a Crime Thriller

Silent Reading Vol. 1 cover, two men walking under a clear umbrella on a rain-wet street at night

Image: Seven Seas cover for Silent Reading: Mo Du Vol. 1

Start here if you like mysteries. Seven Seas calls it "The hit danmei thriller" from priest: a young man is found strangled outside a high-rise on the West Side of Yancheng with a sheet of paper over his face, and Sergeant Luo Wenzhou, head of the Criminal Investigation Team, takes the case. The romance runs through Fei Du, "the aloof, razor-sharp CEO of the Fei Corporation".

The first chapter in the original is a prologue that opens with a line from The Red and the Black. Fei Du spends the evening at the opening of a private club, and a cheerful delivery boy with a small crescent-shaped scar on his forehead asks a coffee-shop clerk where the club is. The chapter ends after midnight in the run-down West District, where a stray cat finds a body: a swollen face, a crescent scar, and a torn sheet of paper over the forehead. The victim is introduced alive before he's found dead, so the clues are there to catch on a first read.

The original is finished, with 189 entries in its chapter list counting extras; chapters 1 to 25 are free on JJWXC and the list marks chapter 26 onward [VIP]. In English, Seven Seas lists six volumes: Vol. 1 December 23, 2025, Vol. 4 September 22, 2026, Vol. 5 December 29, 2026 and Vol. 6 April 20, 2027. You can read four now and finish in spring 2027. Skip it if you want romance up front; this one is a murder case first.

2. Guardian: Zhen Hun: Best Finished Modern Fantasy

Guardian: Zhen Hun Vol. 1 cover, two men in suits face to face, one in glasses, one with a cigarette

Image: Seven Seas cover for Guardian: Zhen Hun Vol. 1

Take Guardian if you want to finish what you start. All three volumes are out: August 29, 2023, March 26, 2024 and August 13, 2024. Seven Seas sells it as "the modern fantasy danmei/Boys' Love trilogy about gods, ghosts, and supernatural investigations". Zhao Yunlan runs a covert division of the Ministry of Public Security, and a death at a local university puts him across from Professor Shen Wei.

Chapter 1 is funnier than that blurb suggests. Guo Changcheng, a painfully shy graduate whose uncle found him a government job, turns up at No. 4 Guangming Road at 2:30 a.m. on the fifteenth of the seventh lunar month because his letter said to. The doorman is friendly, the boss, "Director Zhao", switches from scowl to dimpled smile on sight, and then Guo notices the doorman has no tongue and the woman in HR has stitches around her neck. He faints. If that tone works for you, the rest will. The original's chapter list has 110 entries counting extras, with 1 to 24 free on JJWXC.

3. Run Wild: Sa Ye: Best Slice-of-Life Modern Danmei

Run Wild Vol. 1 cover, a teenage boy with a backpack facing a young man and a small child on a snowy street

Image: Seven Seas cover for Run Wild: Sa Ye Vol. 1

Pick Run Wild if you want no ghosts and no murders, just two teenagers in a cold city. It's the one Seven Seas tags Slice of Life. Jiang Cheng, unwanted by his adoptive parents, is sent to "a cold, gray city" to live with a father whose only talent is gambling, and meets Gu Fei, "a boy his age with a musical staff shaved into his hair".

The first chapter is Wu Zhe at his driest. Jiang Cheng switches his phone off after the seventh text from his girlfriend, steps off the train into snow, and helps a mute little girl on a skateboard who's being bullied. When he calls her brother, Gu Fei, he hears "撕票吧" ("kill the hostage, then"), and when Gu Fei turns up on a motorbike his first question is whether she fell in a cesspit. Then his birth father, who promised to wait at the corner, answers the phone mid-game ("这把太臭了", "this hand is rubbish") and keeps him waiting in the snow. It's bleak and funny, and halfway through he cries alone at a bus stop. The original's list has 152 entries counting extras, 1 to 15 free.

Seven Seas lists six volumes: Vol. 1 January 21, 2025, Vol. 5 June 2, 2026, Vol. 6 November 3, 2026. It finishes this year. Skip it if slow pacing bores you.

4. Case File Compendium: Bing An Ben: Best for Dark Psychological Drama

Case File Compendium Vol. 1 cover, a man in a dark coat standing behind a younger man in a white coat at night

Image: Seven Seas cover for Case File Compendium: Bing An Ben Vol. 1

Read the warnings before you buy this one. Seven Seas calls it "a modern tale with a sci-fi edge" about He Yu, wealthy and mentally unstable, and Xie Qingcheng, his former doctor, who develop "a deep, aggressive relationship". It's by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou, author of The Husky and His White Cat Shizun, and runs ten volumes: Vol. 1 February 13, 2024, Vol. 9 August 25, 2026, Vol. 10 December 8, 2026. Our guide to whether Case File Compendium is finished covers the final volume and the locked chapters of the original.

The leads don't appear in chapter 1. It's a ghost story: a student with a disfigured face visits the teacher he's closest to, to say goodbye, gives her a love poem, confesses to burning his classmates' bags, and reads her books all night. In the morning his tea has frozen in a warm room, the cookies are untouched, and his mother tells her on the phone that the day before was the seventh day after his death. It's a sad, well-built opening, and it tells you the book is about cruelty and illness more than romance. The JJWXC page tags it 虐文 (painful) and 异能 (special powers), and its chapter list has no paid chapters: 272 rows, 15 of them locked by the site. We'd point patient readers who like heavy books here; anyone wanting comfort reading should skip it.

5. Riverbay Road Men's Dormitory: Best Short Modern Comedy

Riverbay Road Men's Dormitory Vol. 1 cover, housemates cooking, gaming and lifting weights in a bright shared living room

Image: Seven Seas cover for Riverbay Road Men's Dormitory Vol. 1

Two volumes, both out (April 15 and July 22, 2025), and Seven Seas sells it as "A modern-day romp". Zhang Yuwen, a multimillionaire film director, quits to write a novel and rents his villa's empty rooms to four gay men for research: Yan Jun, a single father; Chen Hong, a fitness coach; Zheng Weize, a shy livestreamer; and Chang Jinxing, a playboy photographer. It's the ensemble comedy of the seven, and its genre line includes LGBT+ Topics.

We haven't read this one. The original, 江湾路七号男子宿舍 by Fei Tian Ye Xiang, isn't on JJWXC, and we found no official free copy. If you want something short and light after Case File Compendium, it's the one we'd try next, based on the premise.

6. Panguan: The Twelfth Gate: Best Modern Supernatural Danmei

Panguan: The Twelfth Gate Vol. 1 cover, two young men in front of ghostly figures and black swallows

Image: Seven Seas cover for Panguan: The Twelfth Gate Vol. 1

Panguan is the newest pick and a good bridge if you came to danmei through xianxia. Seven Seas calls it "a modern-day, supernatural danmei" from Mu Su Li, set in the universe of Copper Coins and Three Hundred Years of Longing. Wen Shi is a panguan, a cultivator who puts the dead to rest, and when the failed panguan Xie Wen answers his ad for a roommate, Xie Wen becomes "Wen Shi's most tempting meal".

Screenshot: Jinjiang Literature City, 判官 chapter 1, October 13, 2026

Chapter 1 was our favourite opening of the six we read. It starts with a short note signed by Shen Qiao about collecting "Brother Wen" each time he climbs back out of the Wuxiang Gate. Then a taxi driver on a rainy Qingming night slowly works out that the small boy in his back seat speaks in a grown man's voice. By the time Wen Shi walks into the villa estate he has grown into a young man, the old Shen Qiao collapses into a pile of clothes and plum branches tied with cotton thread, and Shen Qiao's heir announces that the family money is gone and he's put the spare rooms up for rent. The original's list has 123 entries counting extras, 1 to 21 free.

Seven Seas dates Vol. 1 September 15, 2026, Vol. 2 December 1, 2026 and Vol. 3 April 13, 2027, out of four volumes.

7. The Lucky Egg Game: Cai Dan You Xi: Best Death-Game Horror

The Lucky Egg Game Book 1 cover, two young men fighting with a staff and a blade against a blood-red moon

Image: Seven Seas cover for The Lucky Egg Game Book 1: Death Game

Architecture student Lin Jue "never expected his Friday night to end in bloodshed". A "lucky egg" drags him into the Devil's Hunting Ground, and medical student Song Hanzhang saves his life. Seven Seas tags it Action, Drama and Supernatural.

Chapter 1 of the original 彩蛋游戏 is very gory. Lin Jue walks into a silent dorm, gets a sweet-voiced call welcoming him to the hunting ground ("the theme this time is zombies"), hears his roommate slamming against their door, and is attacked by the dorm supervisor. A cold stranger pins her down and tells him to finish her with a chair, and the chapter describes what that does to her head in detail. It reads fast. Skip it if gore bothers you. JJWXC lists that first 彩蛋游戏 book at 30 chapters, none of them paid.

Three English books: Death Game August 25, 2026, Death Loop November 24, 2026, Death Coda March 23, 2027. The same author's Welcome to the Nightmare Game, in the same universe, has Vol. 1 dated March 16, 2027.

If finishing matters, Guardian and Riverbay Road are complete in English. If you want something long, Case File Compendium (10), Silent Reading (6) and Run Wild (6) run six volumes or more. "Modern" doesn't mean realistic, either: Guardian, Case File Compendium, Panguan and The Lucky Egg Game all have a supernatural or science-fiction layer. For the other end of the genre, see our best danmei xianxia novels in English, or the completed danmei reading list if finished series are all you want.

Our Take

Going by the first chapters, the Panguan hook pulled us in quickly and Guardian made us laugh, while Silent Reading asks for patience and plants its clues early. For a newcomer we'd go Guardian first, since it's finished and light on its feet, then Silent Reading, then Run Wild. We'd wait on Panguan until Vol. 2 arrives in December, so the story doesn't stall after one book. Case File Compendium and The Lucky Egg Game are for readers who already know they like dark books.

What Readers Say

A September 2025 thread on r/DanmeiNovels asking for "top modern danmei" drew 27 comments. Silent Reading was the top-voted answer, and Guardian came up too.

  • PhilosophyStrict7267: "Mo Du (Silent Reading) by Priest is the best modern danmei I've ever read".
  • boringbonding: "Guardian is fantasy but has a modern China setting for most of it".
  • Zealousideal_Hat8297 asked "does little mushroom count as modern danmei?", the same line we drew when we left it out.

In an older thread on the same question, quinunu wrote: "Saye is very good. It is a youth/school novel but very interesting."

Coming Next: Modern Danmei Already on the Calendar

Three more series with a present-day premise have dated first volumes, none out yet:

We haven't ranked these, because no volume is out yet.

How We Checked This

On October 13, 2026 we read chapter 1 of six originals on Jinjiang Literature City, free and signed out: 默读 (Silent Reading), 镇魂 (Guardian), 撒野 (Run Wild), 病案本 (Case File Compendium), 判官 (Panguan) and 彩蛋游戏 (The Lucky Egg Game). We saved each chapter and each book page with its chapter list. The same day we re-read all ten Seven Seas series pages and the Seven Seas danmei release calendar for the dates, plus two r/DanmeiNovels threads. We didn't read Riverbay Road Men's Dormitory.
