Is Case File Compendium Finished? When Volume 10 Lands
The story ended in 2022. The English books end this winter, and nothing in the schedule says that date is slipping.
Verdict: Not in English yet: nine of ten Seven Seas volumes are out, and the final one ships December 8, 2026. The Chinese original is complete.
Is Case File Compendium finished? Not in English, not yet. Seven Seas has every Case File Compendium volume but the last on shelves, and that one is due in early December. The Chinese original, Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou's 病案本 (Bing An Ben, "BAB" to fans), finished on Jinjiang Literature City (JJWXC) back in 2022.

So is Case File Compendium finished as a story? Yes. As an English series you can read to the last page, it will be in about seven weeks. If you've been holding off until the run is complete, you can start now: the first nine volumes will take you up to the finale's doorstep, and nothing in the release schedule suggests a delay.

| Seven Seas English novel | 9 of 10 volumes out | Vol. 9, Aug 25, 2026 |

Is Case File Compendium Finished in English? Where the Run Stands
Seven Seas lists the series at ten volumes, each a $19.99 paperback. Volume 1 came out in February 2024, and no gap since has run longer than about four and a half months. The finale keeps that rhythm, and Penguin Random House, which distributes the books, shows the same December date.

The reading order is simply the volume order. There's no prequel, side volume or spin-off to slot in, and the extras don't come as a separate book: the publisher says the last volume carries the story's "true conclusion, along with several extra chapters" about what comes after.
The Traps Before You Buy Volume 10
Don't read the Volume 10 blurb if you're mid-series. The official description gives away a major turn of the last arc in its first lines, and readers under the cover reveal noticed. If you only want to know how it ends in broad strokes, the same copy promises a happily ever after for He Yu and Xie Qingcheng. That's as far as we'll go.
Pick your edition now. The Special Edition costs ten dollars more and shrinkwraps a double-sided bookmark, five postcard prints, a poster and a sticker sheet to the same book. Not everyone thinks that's worth it: under the cover reveal, u/Technical-Bad-7447 said they didn't need "five postcards with the covers printed on them."
Mind the content. Seven Seas files it under Boys' Love, danmei, drama and science fiction, and its own blurb promises a "deep, aggressive relationship" and a "dark obsession." Take that at face value. Read the content warnings before you buy, and if you're new to the genre, our danmei beginner's guide is a gentler place to start.
The cover reveal for the last volume drew a mixed crowd on r/DanmeiNovels. The top comment was u/AlwaysTheNerd's: "The fact that this is the last Meatbun volume." Meatbun is the fan nickname for the author, and the point stands: her other two Seven Seas series, The Husky and His White Cat Shizun and Remnants of Filth, are already done in English. Another commenter added that it would be "4 years this November since 2ha vol 1 was released."
Is Case File Compendium Finished in Chinese? Yes, With Holes
Bing An Ben began on JJWXC on August 12, 2021. The two-part finale went up on April 20 and 21, 2022, and the extras ran until the start of June. The novel page marks it complete at about 1.4 million Chinese characters.
What the page also shows is a row of locks. Fifteen chapters are currently held for revision (锁章待改), including two of the extras, under site notices dated March 2023 and September 2024 that cite content rules. If you plan to read the original on the site, you'll hit those gaps. Seven Seas doesn't say whether its translation follows the locked or the earlier text, so we can't tell you either.

What the Opening Is Like
We read chapters 1 to 3 of the Chinese original on JJWXC on October 20, 2026, free and signed out. Chapter 1 opens as a ghost story. A poor, disfigured student visits his teacher at night with a love poem. By morning the tea she poured him has frozen in a warm room, the cookies she watched him eat are untouched, the poem is gone, and his mother tells her the boy died a week ago.
Then chapter 2 pulls the rug. That story was He Yu's, written in Xie Xue's dorm with the teacher modelled on her, and the kid who wrote it has had a crush on her for years. He cooks her Yangzhou fried rice to prove a point. It comes out a sticky lump, and she asks if he really calls that fried rice.
Chapter 3 brings in her older brother, Xie Qingcheng. He was hired at 21 to look after He Yu, then a child, through a disease with only four recorded cases; He Yu is case four. Now He Yu is back from abroad, and Xie questions him like a suspect: why are you here, it's late, this is a staff dorm. When He Yu calls him Dr. Xie out of habit, he says he isn't a doctor anymore. Then he looks at the fried rice and tells the boy to take the apron off. He'll make it again.
That cold, domestic little exchange is the book in miniature. Nobody raises their voice, and you already know these two will be impossible together. The ghost story is a tease; the real horror is the family drama.
Our Take
If you were waiting for the English run to end, stop waiting. Nine volumes is a long read, and by the time you reach the ninth, the tenth will be out. Buy the regular edition unless the postcards and poster matter to you, keep away from the final blurb, and don't use the JJWXC original as a stopgap: fifteen locked chapters make it the worse way through. If you'd rather start with a Meatbun series that's already complete, Erha is the one; see where Erha stands in English.
