Perfect World Donghua vs Novel: Where to Start Reading

The Perfect World donghua is paused at episode 288 and comes back on December 31. If you're caught up, that's two months with nothing new to watch, and the novel has the war at Imperial Pass waiting. Open Chen Dong's book (完美世界, Wanmei Shijie) at chapter 1633 on Wuxiaworld. It's finished in English.

Where the Perfect World Donghua Is Now

The Perfect World donghua is at episode 288 and on a break until December 31, 2026. Tencent Video's page reads 更新至288集/全338集: "updated to episode 288 of 338." When it airs, VIP members get a new episode every Friday at 10:00, and the top SVIP tier sees it a day early, Thursday at 18:00. The show premiered on Tencent Video on April 23, 2021, so this is its sixth year on air.

On September 25, Tencent's official channel posted a PV titled "Battle of Imperial Pass" with one line of news: "Return on December 31 with two episodes! Members only!" A day earlier, r/Donghua had already spread the word that the show would be on hiatus "for better animation & viewing experience after ep 288."

Where the Perfect World Donghua Leaves You in the Novel

The newest episode leaves you around chapters 1638 to 1641, at Shi Hao's return to Imperial Pass. Episode 288's official title is 石昊回帝关怒斥罪血之说，原始帝城告急: Shi Hao, back at Imperial Pass, denounces the talk of "sinful blood," and the Primordial Emperor City is in danger. Episode 287's title has him back at the pass with the undying kings about to strike it.

Wuxiaworld's chapter 1638 is titled "Return to Imperial Pass," and its free teaser opens with Shi Hao leading children out of Emperor City. Chapter 1634 is where the "sinner's blood" charge is overturned, and chapter 1641 opens with the bells of an undying king's war chariot ringing across the great desert outside the pass.

Start at chapter 1633, "The Legendary City," where the gates to that city open. That's five chapters before the return, so you may reread a little of the last two episodes, but you won't miss anything. Where the Donghua and the Novel Really Differ

The donghua moves faster than the book and spends its time on fights. By our match it has covered about 1,640 chapters in 288 episodes, near six chapters an episode on average. Tencent's page lists 338 episodes in all. If that's the whole run, the last 50 have about 375 chapters to fit, seven or eight per episode.

Some stretches already move faster than that average. The episode titles jump from Shi Hao's escape (EP285, around chapter 1610) to the lightning abyss (EP286, chapter 1626). No official title mentions the Immortal Domain chapters in between, 1614 to 1624. Titles alone can't tell you whether the show cut them or folded them in. The novel spends about ten chapters there.

Viewers who have read the book say the same about pace. When the hiatus was announced, u/Bogzy wrote that "a common complaint at least from novel readers is that they skip too much." In an August thread, u/Lost-Banana-1867 put it this way: the studio "sped up the narrative and slowed down the action." u/NoStyle9020 replied that "the donghua is decent but novel is much better in story telling."

We'd take the novel for what comes next. The show's break lands right before the war at Imperial Pass, and the book has room for the chapters the episodes squeeze.

The Perfect World Movies

Tencent lists two Perfect World films next to the series. The first, 火之灰烬 ("Ashes of Fire"), is a 2024 release listed at three episodes. The second, 九劫焚天 ("Nine Tribulations Burning Heaven" on r/Donghua), came out in 2026 as one film. On r/Donghua, u/Bogzy called it "canon but not tied to the current story arc," with "the future mc going into the past," so "you can watch it whenever u want." We haven't watched either film.

Where to Watch the Perfect World Donghua in English

In English, the official route is Tencent's YouTube channel, Tencent Video-ANIMATION, or WeTV. The channel's Perfect World playlist marks EP257 onward as members-only. EP1 and EP256 played without a membership when we checked; the newest upload asked us to join the channel first. The PV's description sends viewers to the full playlist.

WeTV listed the show "To EP 288" with a VIP tag when we opened it on October 24, and its player offered a free trial of four minutes. Tencent Video's own player wouldn't play from our location; it showed a region error.

Our Take

Watch the Perfect World donghua for the early arcs if you want Shi Hao's village years animated, then switch to the novel. The break until December 31 is the best moment to do it: that chapter puts you a few steps before the war at Imperial Pass, the book is complete, and two free chapters every 23 hours add up to about 130 chapters by the time the show is back. The second film can wait; viewers say it sits outside the current arc. If you're new to everything, start the book at chapter 1 and skip the show.

How We Checked This

On October 24, 2026 we read the free teasers of 45 Perfect World chapter pages on Wuxiaworld, logged out: chapters 1300 to 1700, the last chapter (2015) and Chen Dong's afterword, to line the novel up with the newest episode titles (the rest of each chapter is locked). We opened the Wuxiaworld series page and Tencent Video's Perfect World page and search results. We also went through the 289-entry official YouTube playlist, checked with yt-dlp which uploads would play, and opened the Battle of Imperial Pass PV, WeTV's episode 288 page, Wikipedia's article on Chen Dong and four r/Donghua threads. On October 28 we listed the playlist again: EP288 is still the last episode on it. We haven't watched the donghua's recent episodes or the films. What they cover comes from Tencent's episode titles and the viewers quoted above.
