The Great Ruler Donghua vs Novel: Which Chapter to Read Next
Eight episodes are left in the season and about a hundred chapters of tournament to cover, so the book is where the fights get room to breathe.
Verdict: Caught up to episode 96? Open the novel at chapter 536 on Wuxiaworld. The season ends at chapter 634, and the book covers that stretch at its own pace.
The Great Ruler donghua has reached episode 96, and its last eight episodes have the end of the Great Spiritual Academy Tournament to get through. In Tiancan Tudou's novel that's close to a hundred chapters. If you're caught up and impatient, open the book at chapter 536 on Wuxiaworld. The translation is finished, so you can read past the season finale and keep going.

Our Great Ruler review covers whether the novel is worth starting at all. This page is for viewers of the show: where it stands, how the confusing season numbers work, and where the latest episode leaves you in the book.

Where The Great Ruler Donghua Is Now
iQIYI's own page put it plainly on October 24: 更新至96集/共104集, "updated to episode 96 of 104." New episodes land every Friday at 9:00 Beijing time, members see them first, and the rest are marked as still to come. At one a week with no breaks, the finale would arrive on December 18. That date is our arithmetic, not an announcement.

The show is a 3D annual series made for iQIYI. According to Baidu Baike, season 1 premiered on June 30, 2023 with 52 episodes, and season 2 started on January 9, 2026 with 52 more. Season 2 is built around the Northern Heavens Spiritual Academy, with the hunting war and the academy tournament as its big arcs and guest spots for Xiao Yan from Battle Through the Heavens and Lin Dong from Martial Universe.
Why "season 2 episode 42" and "episode 94" are the same thing
This trips up a lot of viewers. iQIYI numbers the whole run straight through. Its iQIYI Anime Asia channel on YouTube restarted at EP01 for season 2, with "Endless Fire Domain" in January. So that channel's "The Great Ruler 2 | EP42", posted October 23, is iQIYI's episode 94, which the main iQIYI Animation channel posted for free the same day. Add 52 to any season 2 number and you have the number this guide uses.
Where The Great Ruler Donghua Leaves You in the Novel
The newest episodes sit in the Divine Wood Mountain part of the tournament, around chapters 537 to 540. Episode 96's official title is 雷翼破茧, "thunder wings break the cocoon," and the preview clip iQIYI posted on October 23 is called 牧尘硬扛神雷: "Mu Chen takes the divine thunder head-on."
That is the lightning sea. In chapter 538, "Divine Wood Lightning Dipper," the Divine Wood Palace tests its two "Successors," Mu Chen and Xue Tiandou, with green lightning. In chapter 539 Mu Chen withdraws his Spiritual Energy and sits in it, and by chapter 540 the crowd is staring at how he "would actually manage to withstand the fearsome attack of the Divine Wood Lightning Dipper with his physical body."

Start at "Climbing the Mountain," the chapter right before the lightning sea. You may reread a scene or two from episode 96, but you won't skip anything. Here's how the arc lines up, official episode titles against Wuxiaworld's chapter teasers:
| Episode (official title, our translation) | Nearest novel chapter (our match) |
|---|---|
| EP81: First battle in the ruins | 455, The Continent of Ruins |
| EP93: Hand-to-hand with spiritual power sealed | 521, Moving in Stealth (a Sealing Spiritual Array cuts off Spiritual Energy) |
| EP96: Thunder wings break the cocoon | 537-540, Lightning Sea to Ten Pieces of Treasure |
| Season finale: Mu Chen beats Ji Xuan and wins the tournament | 634, Champion |
The last row comes from iQIYI's own arc summary, which says the season ends with Mu Chen defeating his rival Ji Xuan, settling the blood feud from the Spiritual Road and becoming tournament champion. The rest is our match; iQIYI doesn't publish a chapter chart. Watching the free uploads, which stop at episode 94? Chapter 520, "Hidden Spiritual Courtyard," is the safe start.
Another Tiancan Tudou adaptation, much closer to its last arc.

Where the Donghua and the Novel Really Differ
Pace is the big one, and it's about to get bigger. By our match, episodes 81 to 96 covered roughly chapters 453 to 540: about 88 chapters in 16 episodes. To reach the champion chapter, the last 8 episodes need to cover about 94. That's twice the speed, through the stretch with the most fights: the point rankings, a cut back home in chapter 598 to an academy that has heard nothing for half a year, then the knockout rounds. Expect cuts.
Viewers who know the book have been saying the show moves too fast since season 2 opened. Under the premiere thread, u/jinkazama90 wrote that it "feels like they are rushing the story too much." A novel reader, u/MasterOzz, explained a missing character by pointing to what the show left out: "if they had adapted the Timeskip you would've seen her because she was refining Divine Lightning Beads in the Lightning Territory, where Mu Chen got the Lightning God Physique."
The redesign split people too. In a May thread, u/KnightKal warned that "season 2 will give you a headache trying to see who is who, as they changed teh art style, characters model, and overall tone of the entire show." u/ButIDigr3ss added that "Mu Chen is just bouncing from random test to random test." Others liked the change: in the same thread u/Present_Level_4738 called the new season "NEXT level."
The novel's own weakness is the one we flagged in the review: a stiff translation. If you can live with that, you get the tournament at full length.
Where to Watch The Great Ruler Donghua in English
The official English route is iQIYI's YouTube channels. On iQIYI Animation, episodes 95 and 96 were members-only when we checked on October 24, while episode 94 was up for free with a 限时免费 ("free for a limited time") tag, posted October 23 like the Asia channel's copy. iQIYI Anime Asia carries season 2 under its own numbering. Its EP01 had more than 517,000 views when we looked.
The iQ.com app is the other official door, but its search from our location only turned up the 2020 live-action drama called The Great Ruler (北灵少年志之大主宰 in Chinese), not the donghua. Don't mix the two up; the drama is a separate adaptation.

Our Take
We'd switch to the novel now. The show has eight episodes for close to a hundred chapters of tournament, so the stretch you most want, from the Ji Xuan showdowns to the final, is the one likeliest to be squeezed. Two free chapters every 23 hours gets you through that stretch in about seven weeks, which is roughly when the season should end, so the free tier keeps you just ahead of the show. Keep watching for the fights; read for the parts between them. New to everything? Start the book at chapter 1 and treat the donghua as a highlight reel.
How We Checked This
On October 24, 2026 we read the free teasers of 101 Great Ruler chapter pages on Wuxiaworld, logged out: chapters 506 to 599 one by one, plus seven key chapters from 223 to the end of the tournament, and matched them against iQIYI's episode titles (the rest of each chapter is locked). We opened iQIYI's 大主宰年番 page with its full episode list and arc summary, Baidu Baike's entry, the Wuxiaworld series page and chapter list, and the official YouTube uploads for episodes 92 to 96 and the season 2 premiere, checking with yt-dlp which ones play without a membership. We also read five r/Donghua threads. We haven't watched the donghua's episodes. What they cover comes from the official titles and previews and the viewers quoted above.
