What Is Danmei? The Meaning of Chinese BL Fiction, Explained

What is danmei? Danmei (耽美, dānměi) is a genre of Chinese fiction built around romantic relationships between men, and the word literally means "indulging in beauty." It grew out of Japanese boys' love (BL) and Western slash fiction, is mostly written by and for women, and is mostly published first on platforms like JJWXC.

What Is Danmei, Exactly?

It's a relationship genre, not a setting genre. The central romance is between two men; apart from that, period, magic system and tone are all free to change. The word itself was borrowed back from Japanese tanbi, an older term for BL prose, which is why you'll also see it translated as "addicted to beauty" on Wikipedia's danmei page. Same idea, slightly stronger verb.

The history is short and very online. Japanese BL manga reached mainland China in the early 1990s through pirated Taiwanese translations; Western slash fiction fed in too. The first danmei stories went up online around 1998, and by 1999 there were forums built just for them. So when new readers ask about danmei vs BL, the honest answer is: siblings. Chinese fans often use the two words interchangeably, while DanmeiNews points out that "danmei" is used specifically for works that originate in Chinese.

Who writes it matters, too. Most well-known danmei authors are women writing for women, and one survey of Chinese readers found around 88% of them identify as female. You can feel that on the page: what people feel about each other gets as much room as who wins the fight, sometimes more.

What Is Danmei's Home Platform?

Most danmei starts life as a web serial, and a lot of the titles you'll find in English started on JJWXC (Jinjiang Literature City), which launched in August 2003. It's China's largest publisher of women's web fiction, with more than 500,000 works hosted, and danmei is what it's known for: in 2022, 79 of its 100 most popular works were danmei. Changpei and Myrics host danmei as well, but JJWXC is where a title usually has to win first before anyone talks about print rights or a drama.

There's a wrinkle you'll spot the moment you open a JJWXC page. After a 2014 anti-pornography campaign, the site renamed its danmei channel chun'ai (纯爱, "pure love"), and that's the label it still uses.

That's Sha Po Lang by Priest, one of JJWXC's signed authors. Its category reads 原创-纯爱-架空历史-爱情: original, pure love, alternate history, romance. It's complete at about 656,000 Chinese characters, and a red line on the page recommends it for readers 18 and over because of its "niche emotional elements," which is about as close as the site gets to saying "two men" out loud. Priest's own blurb calls it "unconventional steampunk."

From there, a hit can branch into manhua, donghua, audio dramas and live action. Sha Po Lang became a web series of the same name at home and Stars of Chaos: Sha Po Lang in Seven Seas' English print line.

The "General's Slope" outside the border town of Yanhui turns out to be a heap of scrap armor, dumped fourteen years earlier by the Black Iron Battalion on its way home from a northern campaign. Nothing grows on it, and the town has grown ghost stories to match. The teenage Chang Geng practices sword there alone every day. His tutor, Shen Yi, teaches local kids by day and, once they've gone home, rolls up his sleeves to fix steam engines, steel armor and mechanical puppets. Shen Yi's brother, Shen Shiliu, is the town layabout: half-blind, hard of hearing, and playing the clay xun so badly behind a paper window that the nicest thing Chang Geng can say is that it's a very graceful funeral wail. Two years earlier the brothers saved Chang Geng from a pack of wolves, and Shiliu cheerfully accepted him as a foster son on the spot.

That's the danmei setup in miniature. The world is steampunk military, the first chapter is about a boy and the odd adult who claims him, and the romance is a long way off. JJWXC's own label tells you where it's going.

What Danmei Is Not: A Note on Setting

Danmei isn't a synonym for xianxia, and it isn't automatically historical. DanmeiNews' primer lists historical, science fiction, campus romance and modern supernatural, with e-sports and infinite flow (survival-game horror) as the newer favorites; Wikipedia adds steampunk and zombie blends. What stays fixed is the central relationship.

The overlap with xianxia and wuxia is real, though, and common enough to confuse people: a story can be both danmei and xianxia, with the romance running through a cultivation plot. Sha Po Lang shows the other direction, a danmei built on steampunk military worldbuilding rather than cultivation.

Where Readers Tell Beginners to Start

When a new reader on r/DanmeiNovels asked which of four Seven Seas books to pick first (Legend of Exorcism, Ballad of Sword and Wine, Remnants of Filth and The Husky and His White Cat Shizun), the thread mostly converged on one. "I think it's the easiest starting point," u/sardonisms wrote of Legend of Exorcism; "definitely the lightest of the four," u/Gabbyfest agreed. The warning came just as fast: "You should definitely search TWs on Erha before you start," said u/TrifleTrouble.
