Best System Novels to Read in English, From Mechanic to Monk

Five translated system novels, ranked by what their first chapter does with the game window. A sci-fi NPC story beats the famous one.

8 min readLast reviewed By Ethan Mercer

Verdict: Start with The Legendary Mechanic; read My House of Horrors if you want the system to come with dread, and pick Keyboard Immortal if you won't pay for chapters.

The best system novels to start with in English are The Legendary Mechanic, then My House of Horrors. We opened five finished or long-running translations on October 14, 2026, read the first chapter of each (two for Keyboard Immortal and The Monk That Wanted to Renounce Asceticism), and ranked them by what the opening does with the system: does it change the story, or just hand out prizes?

What We Looked For in the Best System Novels

A system is the game window in the hero's head that sets missions and pays out rewards; our explainer on what a system novel is covers the device. The good ones make it cost something or bend the plot. The bad ones are what readers in a May 2026 r/noveltranslations thread lined up to complain about. "100000x rewards systems. What is even the point of the novel at that point?" asked u/Hectabeni. u/ArmanyS went further: "Every system that talks."

We'd take both complaints seriously. Two of our picks have systems that literally speak (the Monk's deadpan voice, Keyboard Immortal's icy one), and they earn it, which is the test.

The Best System Novels, Ranked

1. The Legendary Mechanic

Han Xiao was a professional power leveler, paid to grind other people's characters in a VR game called Galaxy. He wakes up on a lab table as "Test subject number 24," just declared dead, in a facility run by a faction from the game's first version. He runs, gets beaten by guards with electric batons, and works out in a dark cell that he's inside Galaxy. Then the interface opens, and it's the best character sheet we've read in the genre. His model is "NPC," with a countdown to the game's launch, and his rating line reads "[Piece of trash with a combat strength of 5; pick any NPC out from the streets and he will wipe the floor with you a hundred times!"

That countdown is the hook. He isn't a player; he's an extra with a year before the players arrive, and he remembers how the game plays out. The system is the game he used to work in, so knowing it is his whole edge, and it bends every decision from the first chapter. It's science fiction rather than cultivation, which is a plus if you've read a lot of the latter. The Legendary Mechanic on Webnovel.com

2. My House of Horrors

Chen Ge runs a haunted house attraction that scares nobody. The opening line is a visitor complaining it's the first time they've "visited such an un-scary Haunted House," his actors are quitting, and his parents vanished half a year ago leaving him the business. The system arrives through a phone found where they disappeared. It asks "Do you believe there are ghosts in this world?" and when he says there should be, it makes him the new owner and opens a status screen that's the saddest stat block on this list: "Daily Visitor Number: Four," a reputation of zero, and a menu of scenarios rated by "Scream Factor."

It's a management sim with dread underneath, and the dread wins. The system comes from the spot where his parents vanished and, he notes, talks with his father's pompous air, which is a stranger hook than any prize. It has the highest rating here. 3. The Monk That Wanted to Renounce Asceticism

Fangzheng is the only monk left at One Finger Temple, a broke mountain temple in the northeast whose abbot just died. He wants to quit, marry and have a kid, and chapter 1 opens with him shouting "Amitabha, what the f*ck!?" at the document that makes him abbot. In chapter 2 the Buddha System binds him, then mentions that breaking its rules means he "will perish without any descendants." Can he take it back? Yes, says the system: the binding lifts "once you die." He swears at it and a bolt of lightning hits the ground in front of him. His first mission is to clean the temple; the reward is a plaque.

This is the one that talks, and it's why the book works: the system is a deadpan boss and Fangzheng is an employee who can't quit. The rewards are small and the jokes come from him wriggling. 4. Library of Heaven's Path

Zhang Xuan was a high-school librarian; he wakes up as the worst teacher in a martial academy, with a record zero on the teaching exam and an ultimatum to sign one student or lose his post. Seventeen students run from him in a day before he bluffs a confused girl into his class with lines borrowed from the internet. Then a palace appears in his head, labelled Library of Heaven's Path, and his reaction is the best line in the chapter: "Could this be the gift pack for transcenders? A library?" He reaches for a book and his hand passes straight through.

It's by far the most read of the five, and the joke engine (a fraud who really does know everyone's weak points) carries a long way. We rank it fourth because chapter 1 ends before the library does anything; the con is fun, the system is still a locked door. Library of Heaven's Path on Webnovel.com

5. Keyboard Immortal

Zu An is mid-argument on a forum when ball lightning comes through the window. He wakes in another world, already declared dead by a coroner, as the town's "useless son-in-law of the Chu clan" who supposedly climbed into his sister-in-law's bed on his wedding night. His system is a floating keyboard with every key locked; to unlock the function keys he has to find secret manuals in "the Twelve Unknown Regions," and in chapter 2 his new wife tells him that asking about those regions will get him killed.

The jokes are crude and fast, and the system is barely a system yet after two chapters. It's here for a practical reason: Wuxiaworld marks it "Free for All Chapters" (50 open without an account, the rest after a free sign-in), which none of the other four can say. If you'd rather not pay at all, start here. Keyboard Immortal on Wuxiaworld

Our Take

Start with The Legendary Mechanic: it's the cleanest case of a system that changes how the hero thinks rather than just what he gets. My House of Horrors is the pick if you like your levelling-up with something wrong underneath it, and The Monk is the funniest of the five. Library of Heaven's Path is the one everyone has heard of and is a fine fourth. Keyboard Immortal is the free option, crude jokes included. If you'd rather your system sit in a murim world, our list of transmigrated-into-murim novels has a few, including one hero who refuses his.
