Best Rebirth Novels in English, From Villain to Empress

Plenty of books called rebirth novels are body swaps. These five send the hero back into their own younger body, and the most famous hook never got an ending.

10 min readLast reviewed By Daniel P. Cross

Verdict: Start with Reverend Insanity if you can live with a villain and an ending that was never written; take Venomous Empress Reborn for a heroine's revenge that is finished.

The best rebirth novels in English start with Reverend Insanity: a demon who has lived five centuries gets cornered by every righteous sect at once, burns his last treasure, and wakes up a teenager the night before his clan's Awakening Ceremony. Right behind it is Venomous Empress Reborn, for readers who want a heroine settling scores. Every pick below follows the same rule: the hero dies, keeps the memories, and wakes up in their own body years earlier. We read the opening chapters of four of them on October 22, 2026; the fifth, a danmei series in print, we picked from its publisher's page.

What Counts as a Rebirth Novel Here

Chinese readers call the genre rebirth (重生, chongsheng), and the word is broader than you'd think. Wuxiaworld's guide to urban web novels defines it as a hero "reborn several decades into the past" who "walks the path of life again," then adds that in some works the hero is reborn "as another person." We left that second kind out. If someone else's body is involved, it's closer to transmigration, and our transmigration vs reincarnation vs rebirth explainer draws that line in detail.

Don't trust the cover to sort them for you. Wuxiaworld's Rebirth of a Fashionista traps its heroine's soul "in the body of a poor girl," and Rebirth of a Star has its heroine "reborn into the body of" a stranger. Both are body swaps. It works the other way too: Webnovel tags Venomous Empress Reborn, as clean a rebirth as you'll find, with Reincarnation.

Readers mix the words up as well. When u/Efeyester asked r/noveltranslations for "novels where the MC goes back to their younger selves," the post was titled "Best regression(?) novels?" and listed two of our picks as already read: Tales of Demons and Gods and Rebirth of the Thief Who Roamed the World. One reply, from u/gjvf, files Reverend Insanity under "Regression [Return to past with future knowledge]." Korean novels usually call the same move regression, so if that's the word you searched, you're in the right place.

We'd take that thread's instinct over the cover labels: what matters is whose body the hero wakes up in.

1. Reverend Insanity: Start Here If You Can Take a Villain

Pick it if you want a second life that gets used, not redeemed; skip it if you need a story to end. Reverend Insanity (Gu Zhen Ren, 蛊真人, which is also the author's pen name) opens on a last stand. The righteous sects have Fang Yuan surrounded, and the first line is a demand: "Fang Yuan, surrender the Spring Autumn Cicada obediently, and I'll grant you a swift death!" He stands in his own blood, remembers that he was "once a scholar in China" before he transmigrated here, and laughs: "If my newborn Spring Autumn Cicada works," he says, "I'll walk the demon's path again!" So he's technically both a transmigrator and a reborn hero, which tells you how loose these labels get.

Chapter 2 wakes him in Gu Yue village in the rain, with the Cicada gone and nothing to show for five centuries but "his 500 years worth of memories and experience." The scene that sold us comes a page later. His twin brother, Fang Zheng, slips in to close the window, and Fang Yuan sizes up the aunt and uncle who raised them: "This was not love, but a type of investment." Then he dismisses the boy with the line that sets the whole book's tone: "Revenge is not my intention, the demonic path does not compromise." Most reborn heroes come back to fix their regrets. This one comes back to do it all again, better.

The price is the ending. Webnovel marks it Completed, but Wikipedia is blunt: "The published text stops immediately before its final battle, and no ending has ever been written." The novel was pulled from Chinese platforms in 2019 and never returned to Qidian. That's over two thousand chapters with no last page. Our Reverend Insanity review covers whether that's worth it, and the Reverend Insanity reading guide covers how long the climb takes.

2. Venomous Empress Reborn: The Heroine's Revenge

Pick it if you want a heroine planning her revenge from the first page; skip it if court politics and family scheming bore you. Shen Miao, a general's daughter, helps Fu Xiuyi win the throne, spends twenty years at his side, and gets a length of white silk for it. Webnovel's synopsis lays out the reset: "She was reborn as her fourteen year old self when the tragedies had yet to occur and her family was still intact." The tags at the top of that synopsis are "# scumtorturing # rebirth," and the first three chapters, which we read on October 22, deliver both.

Chapter 1 puts the empress on her knees in a dusty bedchamber while a eunuch waits with the silk, and the emperor offers his idea of mercy: "Since you have been with me for twenty years, I will grant you an intact corpse." Chapter 2 is the twist of the knife. Her own cousins have been waiting years to marry the emperor themselves, and one of them says the rest out loud: "The evidence of First Uncle's rebellion was forged by our two families." In chapter 3 she wakes to Jingzhe, a maid who died in her first life, and decides she's dreaming: "This hallucination before death is too real." What convinces her is her hands. Hers were rough from the hostage years. These are soft and neatly trimmed: "That was not her hand." We liked that the proof of rebirth is a physical detail, not a system message.

It's finished, so you won't be left hanging. The catch is the score: a 4.85 sounds great, but it comes from fewer than seventy ratings, so treat it as a small sample. Before buying chapters for a book this long, check how Webnovel coins and Fast Pass work.

3. Rebirth of the Thief Who Roamed the World: The Finished Game Rebirth

Image: Wuxiaworld cover for Rebirth of the Thief Who Roamed the World

Pick it if you want a gamer's rebirth that's complete in English; skip it if a rushed ending ruins a book for you. Mad Snail's (发飙的蜗牛) novel opens with Nie Yan's revenge already done. He waited "five whole days" outside his enemy's mansion with a sniper rifle, took the shot, and was shot in the back by the bodyguards. Then he wakes up sweating in his old bedroom, where the grandfather clock "his old man loved to exaggerate as a priceless antique" is still ticking. His question is the best line in the chapter: "Am I myself from ten years in the past, or am I myself from ten years in the future?" He's eighteen again, it's summer vacation, and he still knows everything about Conviction, the virtual reality game woven into the real economy.

That knowledge is the fun of the book. The reviews on its Wuxiaworld page split on whether the fun lasts, but agree on where it goes wrong. Eragon Shadeslayer (Recommended) says "the novel is very good," then warns that "the ending is very rushed." warfox02 (Not recommended) blames the author's habit: "Mad Snail did what he do best , rushed endings." We'd read it for the first half's knowledge-cashing and expect the finish to hurry. Wuxiaworld gives two free chapters every 23 hours; whether the rest is worth paying for is in our Wuxiaworld review.

4. The Husky and His White Cat Shizun: The Danmei Rebirth, in Print

Pick it if you want a rebirth that turns into a love story and you'd rather own the books; skip it if you want something short. Seven Seas sums up the premise: the cruel tyrant Taxian-jun "takes his own life…only to be reborn anew," waking "in the body of his younger self," Mo Ran, "a disciple of the cultivation sect Sisheng Peak." He plans to make everyone pay, his teacher Chu Wanning most of all, and the series is about what happens to that plan. Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou wrote it; Rynn & Jun translated it.

We haven't read it for this list, so this entry comes from the Seven Seas series page and our earlier coverage. The English run is done: all eleven volumes are out, the last on March 24, 2026, which our check on whether Erha is finished in English explains. It's also on our list of danmei novels licensed in English. New to the genre's terms? Start with what danmei is.

5. Tales of Demons and Gods: The Best Hook, No Ending

Wuxiaworld cover for Tales of Demons and Gods: a red-haired young man in a long coat crouching, with the Chinese title Yao Shen Ji

Image: Wuxiaworld cover for Tales of Demons and Gods

Read chapter 1 to see how a rebirth hook should work, then stop unless you're fine waiting forever. It's also by Mad Snail, and the opening is the cleanest on this list. Nie Li drifts back into a classroom while an arrogant teacher shows off her fox spirit, notices that "his hands became smaller," and gets the genre's most honest line: "I was actually reborn?" He died fighting the Sage Emperor, and his friends are alive again, so he hugs one of them a little too hard. The friend's verdict: "Weirdo!" It's quick, warm and very easy to keep reading.

Don't. Wuxiaworld lists the series as on hiatus (its page spells it "Haitus") with a release rate of "1 chapter/month," and reader reviews are blunt. knijn marked it Recommended and titled the review "Great novel but don't read it." cbeas8 (Not recommended) is plainer: "you won't ever get an ending to this novel." We'd agree with both. Our best xuanhuan novels in English list keeps it for the premise and says the same about the wait.

Which of the Best Rebirth Novels to Start With

Start with Reverend Insanity. No other book here commits as hard to the premise: Fang Yuan's second life is a plan, not an apology, and the first two chapters show you exactly what you're signing up for. If a villain narrator isn't for you, Venomous Empress Reborn is the one to pick, and it ends. Rebirth of the Thief is the safe finish for game-world readers, Erha is the one to buy on paper, and Tales of Demons and Gods is a first chapter to admire and then put down.

Want the Korean take on the same idea, where it's called regression? Our murim list starts with The Regressor of Mount Hua.

How We Checked This

On October 22, 2026 we read chapters 1 and 2 of Reverend Insanity and chapters 1 to 3 of Venomous Empress Reborn on Webnovel, and chapter 1 of Rebirth of the Thief Who Roamed the World and of Tales of Demons and Gods on Wuxiaworld. We also opened the five series pages, Wikipedia's Reverend Insanity article, Wuxiaworld's urban genre guide and the r/noveltranslations thread. We didn't read The Husky and His White Cat Shizun for this list.
