Into the Sea Novel: Should You Wait for Seven Seas' Baihe?

Seven Seas sold it as a runaway mermaid meeting a kind young cultivator. The book itself starts 45 years later, and by chapter 2 the cultivator is calling her an enemy.

5 min readLast reviewed By Mei-Lin Zhao

Verdict: Wait for it if you want cultivation baihe and can live with the coercive contract arc flagged around chapter 40. Vol. 1: November 2027, $20.99. In Chinese it's complete on JJWXC, no VIP chapters (Nov 1, 2026).

The Into the Sea novel (入海, Ru Hai) is the fourth book in Seven Seas' baihe line and the first one set in a cultivation world. Seven Seas announced the license on October 28, 2026, with Vol. 1 due in November 2027 at $20.99. It's worth the wait if you like a romance told across two timelines, with a mermaid demon hiding inside a sect that hunts demons. Think twice if coercion in a romance is a hard no: the author warns about it on the novel's own JJWXC page.

Seven Seas' blurb is the whole announcement. Lan Wu, a mermaid demon running from an arranged marriage, swallows a mysterious pill to hide her aura, and it seals her powers completely. Ji Lingyue, an aspiring cultivator, finds her weak under a tree and saves her, and Lan Wu decides to follow her to Haochen Mountain so they can both become disciples. The banner Seven Seas posted says pre-orders "open soon" and the cover isn't final.

There's no Into the Sea series page on Seven Seas' site yet: both likely addresses returned "Page not found" on November 1. DanmeiNews' catalog already lists a day, November 30, 2027, and rates the book Mature (18+). Seven Seas' own announcement gives neither.

The Blurb Is the Flashback

We read chapters 1 to 4 in Chinese on JJWXC on November 1, 2026. The blurb leaves out that everything in it is a flashback. Chapter 3 opens with 四十五年前, "forty-five years earlier". The book starts in the present, and the two women are not on good terms.

Chapter 1 shows Lan Wu grown and dangerous. A man running from a wolf demon climbs a maple and finds her already in it. She drops down, her silver bracelet melts into hundreds of needle-thin threads that pin the wolf in midair, and she takes its head off with a sword without a drop of blood on her clothes. She's travelling with a girl of thirteen or fourteen who calls her "Master", and she admits she can't tell north from south. Someone used to travel with her, she says, "but that was a long time ago."

Chapter 2 is the hook. Lan Wu and her student are eating upstairs in a tavern when Ji Lingyue arrives in white: the "third senior sister" of Haochen Mountain. A white gyrfalcon flies out of her sleeve and lands on an empty table upstairs. Ji follows it up to the window: the diners have just left, and the tea is still warm. Back on the street, her junior asks whether she knows the pair. "One of them." A friend? "No." Then, coldly: 是仇人, "an enemy".

Chapters 3 and 4 then play the meeting Seven Seas is selling. Lan Wu is a 200-year-old mermaid, about sixteen or seventeen in human terms, who left the Kunlun Sea rather than marry a shark prince. The pill, from someone she calls Fuyou, sealed her powers and left her collapsing from the summer heat in the mountains. Her rescuer is a thin, tanned teenager with a knife at the belt and a dead rabbit in hand, who gives the name A Ji and is on the way to Haochen Mountain to find a master. Lan Wu assumes A Ji is a boy. Chapter 4 is titled 女孩, "Girl": after they survive a snake demon, A Ji asks, "When did I tell you I was a boy?", and gives her full name, Ji Lingyue.

Chapter 4 of 入海 on JJWXC: A Ji asks when she ever said she was a boy and introduces herself as Ji Lingyue Screenshot: JJWXC, 入海 chapter 4 (女孩), November 1, 2026

It's a strong opening. From chapter 2 you know that whatever happens on Haochen Mountain ends with one woman calling the other an enemy, and the flashback chapters make you want to know how. The prose is plain and quick, with short scenes. We haven't read past chapter 4, so we can't tell you how the reunion pays off.

Haochen Mountain is one of three great sects in this world, and demons are what its disciples hunt. If sects and demon cores are new to you, start here.

The Warnings Yue Ben Du Put on the Page

The JJWXC summary says where the present-day story goes. The two meet again in a secret realm, where Lan Wu's former lover binds her with a beast contract that makes her that woman's servant; only much later does Lan Wu learn the woman also tied their lives together with a life-and-death pact. Under it, the author lists warnings in brackets:

  • the mermaid is the older partner and the one who leads (鲛人年上攻), with some switching;
  • "the author's skill is average, please don't dig into the logic";
  • neither heroine is perfect, and both have flaws;
  • the contract appears around chapter 40, the relationship is unequal while it lasts, and there is coercive behaviour, flagged with red exclamation marks.

There's also a one-line warning about the mothers' generation (母辈雷) that the page doesn't explain. JJWXC tags the book xianxia and HE, a happy ending.

Then there are two versions of the text. DanmeiNews reports that the novel "ran for 214 chapters (with 77 chapters of side stories & Extras)", first uncensored on PO18, and that JJWXC carries a censored version. JJWXC's own table of contents, on November 1, has 160 chapters, the last marked 正文完结 (main story complete), and 30 extras after it. One JJWXC reader commenting on chapter 2 says they're on a third read: "the first two times I read the uncensored version, now I'm trying the censored one." Seven Seas hasn't said which text it is translating or how many volumes the English edition will take.

That's the price of this book. If a contract binding Lan Wu to a former lover (presumably Ji, who calls her an enemy in chapter 2) is your favourite kind of setup, that arc is the reason to buy it. If coercion is a dealbreaker, take the author at their word and skip it.

The Into the Sea Novel Next to Seven Seas' Other Baihe

Seven Seas licensed three baihe novels in July, and Into the Sea joins them at the back of the queue. JJWXC numbers are from each book's page on November 1, 2026; dates and prices are from Seven Seas.

Into the Sea is the only cultivation story of the four, the last to arrive, and a dollar more for Vol. 1. By JJWXC favourites it's third: a long way behind Miss Forensics, well ahead of My Wandering Spirit Lady. It's also the only one JJWXC lists as unsigned (未签约), and the only one whose chapter list has no VIP (paid) chapters; we opened chapters 1 to 4 and the final extra without an account.

Baihe Readers on the Announcement

Seven Seas' Bluesky post had 187 likes and 91 reposts when we read it on November 1. ohyanxi wrote "MERMAID BAIHE MERMAID BAIHE !!", and knshoujo did the count: "THAT MAKES 4 FOR 2027!!" zoey.dog had "heard really good things about this one".

The reply that says the most came from lilisionnach on October 28: "I haven’t heard of this one, but Baihe cultivation has my curiosity piqued." Plenty of English readers are meeting the book through the blurb alone, which is why the author's warnings above are worth reading before you preorder the Into the Sea novel.

If You Can't Wait for November 2027

If you read Chinese, the JJWXC version is complete, and on November 1, 2026 its chapter list had no paid chapters; the ones we tried opened without an account. It's the censored text, so expect cuts. If you'd rather listen, Candy Tree Studio's Chinese audio drama of Into the Sea launched on Fanjiao (饭角) on February 8, 2025. If you only read English and want this line first, Miss Forensics arrives two months earlier, on September 14, 2027.

For cultivation romance you can start in English now, while this one waits for print.

Our Take

We'd preorder it if you like the blurb, and read the warnings section first if you don't. The opening is better than the press release makes it sound: Ji's answer at the end of chapter 2 does more than the whole blurb. What we'd still want before paying is the text question. With DanmeiNews counting 214 chapters and JJWXC's table of contents showing 190, and a Mature (18+) tag in DanmeiNews' catalog, we'd wait for Seven Seas' series page to say how many volumes it plans and who is translating. The book itself is finished, so the wait is on the publisher.

How We Checked This

On November 1, 2026 we read Seven Seas' October 28 announcement and its Bluesky post with the replies and quote posts, DanmeiNews' news post, its July baihe post and two catalog entries, K-Comics Beat's report, Yiggybean's product listing, the JJWXC book page for 入海 and chapters 1, 2, 3, 4 and 190, the JJWXC pages and Seven Seas series pages of the other three baihe novels, and M-Drama's two pages on the audio drama: 22 pages in all. Seven Seas has no Into the Sea series page yet. Reddit returned errors when we tried to open the r/BaiHe announcement thread, so there are no Reddit quotes here.
