Best Sect Building Novels in English, From Founder to Clan

Most lists pad this genre with books where the sect is just a starting point. These five put it at the center, and the best one we read is a family saga.

10 min readLast reviewed By Mei-Lin Zhao

Verdict: Start with History's Number 1 Founder, a finished 1,486-chapter founder story; switch to The Mirror Legacy if you want the slow, dangerous version told through a farming family.

The best sect building novels in English start with History's Number 1 Founder: the hero's whole quest is to found a sect, and the translation is finished. Plenty of lists mix two different books under this label, the one where a hero grows up inside a sect and the one where somebody has to run it. We kept only the second kind, plus a family saga that does the job better than most sects do. If you want comedy, start with the founder; if you want stakes, go to the family.

What Sect Building Novels Have in Common

A sect is the school, army and extended family a cultivator belongs to; our cultivation terms glossary has the rest of the vocabulary. In a sect building novel the hero recruits, teaches, defends and pays for that institution, and its standing is the scoreboard. If the sect is just where the hero starts before he flies off alone, you're reading ordinary xianxia, which is fine, but it's not what you searched for.

Readers asking for these books on r/noveltranslations land on the same few titles. "Really suprised that no one mentioned history number 1 founder," wrote u/Fast-Subject-8917 in a recommendations thread. u/signeti pushed a different shape: "MC does not build sect, but his clan/family in cultivation world." And u/SleenTiidVo answered with the line that explains why that idea is rare: "I never saw a mc focuses on family and clan."

We think that clan suggestion is the most useful thing in the thread, which is why a family saga sits third on this list.

The Best Sect Building Novels, Ranked

We ranked these by how squarely the institution sits at the center of the story, not by prose. That's why the best-written book is third.

1. History's Number 1 Founder: Start Here

Pick it if you want the purest version of the premise; skip it if borrowed heroes from other novels would bother you. We read chapter 1 on Webnovel on October 22, and it's built like a heist. Lin Feng has crossed into a world where village kids toss 100-jin stones for fun, and he's weaker than the children of Wolf Village. His Super Founder System hands him the main quest ("Host creates a sect, establishing this world's number one sect") and a first stage of "Take in 4 disciples" within a year, with a penalty line that makes him swear: "directly eliminate the host!"

What he does next is the whole book in miniature. His novice gift arrives with 300 trading points, and before he has a single student he spends 50 of them on a white Taoist robe, because "the tailor makes the man." Then he walks into the rival village, where the system flags a boy who isn't even four and rates his Body Root at 10, the maximum. The chapter closes on Lin Feng's smile and a warning: "someone was going to get majorly screwed!" Recruitment as a con job, played for laughs.

The twist is in who those disciples turn out to be, and a Webnovel reviewer, Lswarmruler, spells it out: "the 4 main disciples all are main characters from 4 other xianxia novels which are renegade immortal/xian ni, BTTH, perfect world, and yang god." The synopsis already has the master recruiting a Xiao Yan, "a genius of the past but a loser now," which anyone who's read our Battle Through the Heavens review will recognize. Not everyone stays charmed: deikatsuo's whole review is "The more you read into this, the more bored you get." We'd treat the borrowed cast as the real price. If you know Renegade Immortal and Perfect World, the in-jokes land; if you don't, a lot of the book is references you can't catch.

It's by August Eagle, translated by Sparrow_, and it's finished, so you can commit to the full run of almost fifteen hundred chapters without waiting on updates. History's Number 1 Founder on Webnovel.

2. My Disciples Are All Villains: Running a Sect You Can't Defend

Image: Webnovel cover for My Disciples Are All Villains

Pick it for the tension of managing powerful people with nothing but a bluff; skip it if you want a sect built brick by brick. Lu Zhou doesn't found anything. In chapter 1, which we read on October 22, he wakes up as Ji Tiandao, a villainous Patriarch nearly a thousand years old, on Golden Court Mountain with the orthodox sects camped at the foot of it. Of his nine disciples, five have betrayed him, and the eldest left to found the Nether Sect. His cultivation is gone. When the system finally opens, it shows Merit Points at -100,000 and "Remaining life: 3 days."

So he bluffs. The four disciples still on the mountain are arguing about calling for help; Lu Zhou snaps "You want me to die, don't you?" and they drop to their knees. It's the best scene in the three openings we read, because the sect itself is the threat. His starter pack includes Peak Form Cards worth 30 minutes of the old Patriarch's power each, and you can feel the book planning to spend them at the worst moment.

Reader reviews on Webnovel split on whether that tension lasts. OverlordMao: "The system doesn't give him an edge. It gives him a get out of death free card." Immortal_Boomstick complained that the disciples flip "from deadly psychos to loyal somewhat good dogs in around 1 or 2 months." We'd read the first arc for the bluffing and decide from there; if the disciples soften as fast as that reviewer says, the danger has a shelf life. MSRZP wrote it, AppleGreenSheep translated it, and it's complete. My Disciples Are All Villains on Webnovel.

3. The Mirror Legacy: The Clan Version

Pick it if you want building that feels earned and dangerous; skip it if you need a system or a fast power curve. The Mirror Legacy (Xuanjian Xianzu, 玄鉴仙族) by Ji Yueren (季越人) is the best written of the three we read, and it's not about a sect at all. It's ongoing on Wuxiaworld in Dorlaken's translation, and on October 22 it was second on Qidian's monthly vote board, in the race we covered in our October monthly vote report.

We read chapters 1 to 5 on October 22. Lu Jiangxian dies after staying up all night revising his work and wakes as a cracked bluish-gray mirror at the bottom of a stream, able to do nothing but soak up moonlight. In chapter 2 a thirteen-year-old, Li Xiangping, finds it while fishing in the Meiche River and drops it in his basket with the fish. In chapter 3 his father, Li Mutian, a former soldier, watches the moonlight gather into a halo over it, goes pale, and sends his sons for their sabers. The intruder in the melon field turns out to be a cousin stealing melons, and in chapter 4 the second son, Li Tongya, decides the cousin may have seen the mirror: "I'm going to kill him!" His father stops him with one question about whether he'd kill his youngest brother too.

That's the hook for sect-building readers. The institution is a family that has worked the same land for two hundred years, and every choice about the mirror is a bet with all of them on the table. Nobody in the Li family cultivates in those five chapters, which will lose some readers. We'd keep going, and our Mirror Legacy review picks it up through chapter 10.

Three of these picks live on Webnovel and two on Wuxiaworld, and the two sites don't work the same way.

4. Soul Land 2: The Unrivaled Tang Sect: A Revival, Slowly

Wuxiaworld cover for Soul Land 2: The Unrivaled Tang Sect, a blue-haired young man with a glowing eye in a shower of ice shards

Image: Wuxiaworld cover for Soul Land 2: The Unrivaled Tang Sect

Pick it if you already like the Soul Land world and want a sect-revival thread; skip it if you want the sect on page one. This is Tang Jia San Shao's (唐家三少) sequel, finished on Wuxiaworld. The synopsis sets up the long goal: "Ten thousand years have passed since the founding of the Tang Sect on the Douluo continent, and it has declined." Its question is whether a new generation of Shrek's Seven Devils can "rally the Tang Sect." We haven't read this one, so take this as a reading of the listing: the revival is the destination, not the starting point. It's here because "rebuild the fallen sect" is its own subgenre, and this is a finished official example of it.

5. Release That Witch: If You Really Mean Kingdom Building

Image: Webnovel cover for Release That Witch

Pick it if the part you love is logistics and growth; skip it if you need cultivation. There's no sect here. Roland, a prince handed "the worst fief," spends the book "developing a poor and backward town into a strong and modern city," per the synopsis, with witches as his allies. It's on this list because a lot of people searching for sect management really want that feeling of a place getting stronger each chapter, and it has the highest rating of the three Webnovel picks. Expect romance: the Webnovel tags include Harem and Romance next to Kingdombuilding. Second Eye wrote it; it's finished. It also came up in our best Wuxiaworld novels list as a reader's pick for what to read next, and our Release That Witch review reads its opening chapters and says where to stop.

The Sect Novel You Can't Read Officially

If you've seen The Strongest Sect of All Times recommended, here's the catch: you'll find it on Webnovel, but not from Webnovel. The copies we found there on October 22 are user uploads, and one says so outright: "I have not taken the permission from anyone." We don't link those, and we'd rather you didn't read them; there's no official English edition we could find.

Which Sect Building Novel to Start With

Start with History's Number 1 Founder if you want the genre in its plainest form: a man, a quest to build the greatest sect, and four very famous disciples. Read My Disciples Are All Villains next if what you liked was the bluffing. And if you've read a few founder stories already and they've started to feel the same, go to The Mirror Legacy. It's slower and bleaker, and it's the one that treats building something as a risk to the people inside it. If you'd rather your builder came with a game window, our best xianxia novels with a system list picks up there.

How We Checked This

On October 22, 2026 we opened the five official listings on Webnovel and Wuxiaworld, read chapter 1 of History's Number 1 Founder and of My Disciples Are All Villains on Webnovel and chapters 1 to 5 of The Mirror Legacy on Wuxiaworld, went through the reader reviews on both Webnovel pages, checked Qidian's monthly vote board and Webnovel's search for The Strongest Sect of All Times, and read the r/noveltranslations thread above. Soul Land 2 and Release That Witch are judged from their official synopses and listings, not our own reading.
