Best Xianxia Novels With Romance Worth Reading in 2026

Four official English picks, split by the question that matters: one couple, a female lead, or a harem.

5 min readLast reviewed By Mei-Lin Zhao

Verdict: Read Stars of Chaos: Sha Po Lang for a finished single-couple romance and Poison Physician Consort for a female lead whose love story starts late; Against the Gods is for harem readers only.

The best xianxia novels with romance in English come down to one question: do you want one couple or a crowd? For one central pairing and a finished story, read Stars of Chaos: Sha Po Lang. For a female lead whose revenge comes before her love life, read Poison Physician Consort. The other two are cultivation stories where romance is a side dish, and one of them is tagged Harem.

1. Stars of Chaos: Sha Po Lang: The One Real Romance

Read it if the relationship is the reason you're here; skip it if you need cultivation levels. It isn't strict xianxia. Seven Seas files priest's novel under Boys' Love, Danmei, Fantasy, Period Piece and Science Fiction, and sells it as "The steampunk danmei/Boys’ Love series set in a world like historical China". Chang Geng, "a young man raised on the impoverished northern border", discovers that "his godfather whom he trusted more than any other, Shen Shiliu" and others around him are "not what they seem", and follows him "to the heart of the imperial capital". It's here because it's the one book on the list built around a single couple, and it's finished: the fifth and last English volume came out January 14, 2025. Our Sha Po Lang review goes into whether the length pays off.

2. Poison Physician Consort: Revenge First, Romance Later

Read it if you want a female lead and a finished story; skip it if you want romance from chapter one. Ershisi Hui's novel, translated by Blip, is marked Completed and tagged only Romance and Female Protagonist. Bai Luochu "reincarnates into the body of an orphaned daughter of the former great general of the Cloud Water Nation".

We read chapter 1 on October 16, and it opens hard. The first line is "A stench filled the sky!" Bai Luochu comes to in a Bestial Battle Arena with a broken arm while the crowd on the walls chants "Eat her! Eat her!" Her last memory is the betrayal that killed her: "Lu Wenshu, I deserted my apprenticeship for you." She throws a spirit-energy sword at a Fire Lion, it barely flinches, and she finds "even her meridians were blocked up". So the romance starts as a wound, and the first chapter is about survival.

Reader reviews agree it takes its time. Davi92, writing "50+ chapters in", called the lead "smart, merciless, and patient", said to "expect more scheming then fighting", and added that "Romance at the moment is still dry and nonexistent but a potential ML as been introduced." Vengefulcrow, who didn't recommend it, disliked "how rushed it seemed in the beginning". More picks with this setup are in best xianxia novels with female lead.

3. Against the Gods: Only If You Want a Harem

Read it if a big ensemble of love interests is part of the fun; skip it if you want one slow burn. Mars Gravity's novel is the giant here, with 583 reader reviews and still ongoing. Yun Che is "reincarnated as Xiao Che, a recently poisoned teen in another realm" and must overcome "his own hostile clan, his own inability to cultivate, and his own frosty fiancée." Wuxiaworld tags it Xuanhuan rather than Xianxia, and it's the only one of the four tagged Harem. Its most-liked review, from lDanielHolm, doesn't dodge it: "The most controversial aspect of the novels would probably be the harem, but each of Yun Che's romantic interests are distinct and interesting in their own right". Our Against the Gods review reads the first five chapters and looks at what the ongoing run asks of you beyond the romance.

4. Supreme Sword Exalt: Cultivation First

Read it for the sword-and-revenge climb; skip it if romance is the main event. 27 cups of wine's novel, translated by Jazzspresso, is the only entry tagged Xianxia, Wuxia and Cultivation at once, with Romance in the list but no Harem. Gu Han, "Framed for his father’s death and cast aside as a traitor", starts with "nothing but a broken body and a single sword". Reviewers talk about the progression, not the love story: ParagonStar called it a "Standard Xuanhuan starter pack" but said "Overall, I like the execution and pacing of the story", while Alfoodo complained about "repetitive “face-slapping” moments".

Why Danmei Counts Among the Best Xianxia Novels With Romance

When a guide from "Lucas, Wuxiaworld's Chinese licensing manager" introduced xianxia as a male-oriented genre, readers pushed back. cornonthekopp wrote "A lot of the popular danmei novels are also xianxia", and drollawake put the label problem plainly: "In the West, we would call most of them romance novels, Xianxia romances but romance novels nonetheless." If you're new to the term, start with what danmei is.

Our Take

Sha Po Lang is the answer if the romance is the point. Poison Physician Consort is the answer if you want a woman at the centre and don't mind the love story arriving late; its first chapter is the strongest opening on this list, and it's the only Wuxiaworld pick here that's finished. If finished matters most, our best completed Chinese web novels list has more. Against the Gods is for harem readers only, and Supreme Sword Exalt is a cultivation story that happens to have a Romance tag. For a female lead who wakes up in someone else's story instead, see the best transmigration novels with a female lead.

How We Checked This

On October 16, 2026 we reopened the three Wuxiaworld pages and the Seven Seas series page, read chapter 1 of Poison Physician Consort, and rechecked the Reddit thread. We opened them all again on October 20; Supreme Sword Exalt keeps growing, so the table carries its new chapter count. We haven't read the other three for this list.
