Seven Seas Licenses Miss Forensics, a New Baihe Novel

Miss Forensics is coming to English print. Seven Seas has licensed Jiu Nuan Chun Shen's baihe crime novel, and the first volume is due next September. It's the book fans have long asked the publisher for, and it's also one readers argue about. The author's own content warnings, posted on the novel's Chinese page, tell you why before you spend a cent.

What Seven Seas Announced for Miss Forensics

Miss Forensics was one of the fifteen licenses Seven Seas revealed at Anime Expo 2026. The publisher's pitch: "The highly requested baihe/Chinese Girls' Love novel finally makes its official English debut!" It'll come out in single large-trim editions under the Seven Seas Baihe label, with ebooks on digital platforms. DanmeiNews' report on the panel says the three baihe novels in the batch launch Seven Seas Danmei's promised sister imprint, and that this one "has long seen fan requests in Seven Seas's social media posts."

Of the three baihe novels from that panel, it's dated first: Matrilocal Marriage follows on October 12, 2027 and My Wandering Spirit Lady on October 26. Only volume one is listed, and Penguin Random House, which distributes Seven Seas' print books, still returned no result for its ISBN when we searched on October 15, 2026, so don't expect store preorders yet.

The Setup

Lin Yan is a hot-headed forensic doctor. Song Yuhang is the icy detective she's forced to work with, who tests her on the job and off it. The Chinese blurb adds the engine of the plot: the two are brought together by a cold case that spans two generations, and the one-line summary on JJWXC is 为生者权，替死者言, roughly "rights for the living, a voice for the dead."

JJWXC files it as an original baihe suspense novel set in the modern day, signed and complete, at close to 900,000 characters. DanmeiNews counts 144 chapters from a 2019 start. The chapter list itself puts the finale at chapter 141, then two coda chapters, an extra, and two short bonus extras the author added in July 2025.

The Author's Own Warnings

The JJWXC page opens with what the author calls a guide to what to avoid, and it's blunt. Among the lines, in our translation:

• 女一前期人设不讨喜，嘴巴毒: the first lead is unlikeable early on and has a poisonous mouth.
• 两女主都不温柔不细腻: neither heroine is gentle or delicate, and one of them "能打，非常能打" (can fight, really fight).
• 全文架空，私设如山，作者没有相关从业经历: the setting is fictional, the invented details pile up, and the author has no background in the field.

That last one matters for a book Seven Seas is selling as a crime thriller. Read it as a character drama dressed as a procedural, not as forensic realism.

Already in English as a Manhua

You don't have to wait until 2027 to sample the story. The manhua adaptation is on Webnovel as Partners in Crime, Partners in Love, with 57 chapters and about 115,000 views when we checked, and the publisher credit names Jiunuanchunshen and JJWXC. The English comic renames the leads Yarra Lin and Kelsey Song, so search for that title, not "Miss Forensics." DanmeiNews also lists it on Webcomics.

What Readers Say About Miss Forensics

The fan base is real and so is the split. In a June r/BaiHe post about the Thai e-book edition, u/Yamahl called it "One of the most popular baihe in mainland" and added, "Personally I just dislike the FL too much but the story was very interesting." u/taetaetr, glad it got translated, still said "some parts of it is hard to swallow." When another reader posted an "unpopular opinion" thread about one of the leads, u/laine4466 replied that "these are pretty common criticisms that people make for this story."

We'd take the lead's behaviour as the main risk. It's the same thing the author warns about up front, and readers who like the story still bring it up.

Our Take

If you want a baihe story built around police work rather than palace intrigue, this is the one of Seven Seas' three baihe picks we'd watch, and the official edition is the one to wait for. Try a few chapters of the manhua first. If Lin Yan's mouth and Song Yuhang's chill put you off there, the novel won't change your mind, and the author has already told you so.
