Verdict: Worth starting, especially if you know Volcanic Age: chapters 1-20 are free on Wuxiaworld, the opening is warm and funny, and the English is complete. Some readers found the war-heavy middle dragged.

The Regressor of Mount Hua review in short: it's the novel behind the Volcanic Age webtoon, and the opening chapters are better than the premise sounds. A Mount Hua high elder who got through a long war on mediocre talent dies with regrets and wakes up as a boy. What he wants this time isn't to save the world. He wants to matter, to have some fun, and to keep his kind, sickly master alive.

Is it the Volcanic Age novel?

Yes. Wuxiaworld began posting the translation in late June 2024, and Cyncoco's July 19, 2024 announcement said the title had changed but readers "may have seen it in its other form, the Volcanic Age," and called it "one of the first murim novels to ever reach Kakao's Million View ranking."

The names are the first thing a webtoon reader will trip on. The novel's hero is Zhou Xuchuan; the webtoon calls him Joo Seo-Cheon. In the team's goodbye note at the end of the book, Cyncoco mentions building "a list of commonly accepted and understood terminology adopted from other Korean novels and Chinese wuxia," so expect Chinese-style names for people, sects and places throughout.

Don't confuse it with Return of the Mount Hua Sect (화산귀환), the other Mount Hua story about a master who comes back as a child. MyAnimeList lists that one as a novel by Biga, also known as Return of the Blossoming Blade, which began on Naver Series in 2019.

What we read: the prologue and chapters 1 to 5

The setup takes one chapter. Zhou Xuchuan survived "the era of war and chaos" on mediocre talent and ended up one of Mount Hua's high elders. He reached the Harmony Realm a few days before dying of old age, too late to do anything with it. He looks back on a life "riddled with regrets," including that he'd "never even held the hand of a woman," and wakes up as an eight-year-old disciple whose master, Liu Zhengmu, is forty.

The next chapters lay out his plan, and they're funny about it. In chapter 2 he's back climbing "Wild Goose Hell," the training slope every disciple in the sect suffers through. In chapter 3 he uses something he learned decades too late: a prodigy "sixty-six years in the future" will find the secret of the sect's basic cultivation art, and Zhou Xuchuan already knows it.

Chapter 4 has the best scene so far. The leader of a gang of fellow disciples picks on the "flower boy," and the old man in a child's body kicks him in the chest, then announces, sadly, "This is the fist of the martial world." The answer: "What are you saying? That was a kick just now!" By chapter 5 the comedy turns. He remembers that a hidden illness will take his master in five years, and starts working out how to get a cure, from a thief's treasury that won't be found for years to a Water Spiritual Fruit.

What works

A regressor with a small, human goal. The announcement sums it up: he's "not going back to save the world as the 'one true savior'." He wants a second life with the things he missed, so the early chapters stay focused on a boy and the master he wants to keep alive.

Grief under the jokes. The fist-and-kick gag works because chapter 5 follows it with the master's death in his first life, which he never got to prevent. On r/manhwa, u/Helpful-Noise-8350 gave two reasons for liking the webtoon: the regression trope and "Mc's personality. He is not an asshole."

It finishes. Wuxiaworld reviewer Keishacrwright came back after the last chapter to say "it ended even better than I expected" and called the ending "hilarious yet oddly satisfying in its ambiguity."

What it costs you

A big cast. Reviewer BlueMountainTrueMonarch, otherwise positive, found "so many characters introduced that it's hard to keep track of who's who."

A long middle. The community talk we found is mostly about the webtoon, not the novel, so treat it as a hint. On r/MurimReaders in September, u/Cheonso_ma called it "decent but there were a lot a dragged out arcs for me," and u/aj2481 said that after a "freaking good beginning," the "later 30% just went downhill." Three years earlier on r/manhwa, u/Tsukinotaku complained "It's just war after war."

The paywall after 20. Chapters 1 to 20 open in full on Wuxiaworld without an account; chapter 21 shows only a teaser. After that the page offers one free chapter every 23 hours, so the roughly 410 chapters between 21 and the end of the main story would take more than a year to unlock for free.

The Regressor of Mount Hua Review: Who Should Read It

Read it if you liked Volcanic Age and want the complete story in prose, or if you want the regression setup from our murim OP MC list, where it's our first pick, with a softer hero. It also suits readers coming from rebirth novels who want the Korean take. New to the genre's sects and factions? Start with what murim means, and our murim vs wuxia guide explains why a Korean novel is full of Chinese place names.

Skip it if you want a hero who's overpowered from page one, or if long sect-war arcs wore you out in other murim stories. Our take: 7.5 out of 10. The first five chapters are warm and funny, the English is finished, and the 20 free chapters are a fair test.

How we checked this

For this The Regressor of Mount Hua review, on October 23, 2026 we read the prologue and chapters 1 to 5 on Wuxiaworld, went through the series page and its reviews, the July 19, 2024 translator announcement and the team's closing note, and opened chapters 20, 21 and the last few chapters to check what's free and where the main story ends. On October 29 we rechecked the series page and the publish dates of chapters 1, 20 and 21. We also read three Reddit threads about the webtoon. The prologue and chapter 1 were also read on October 16 for our murim list. We haven't read past chapter 5, so everything about the later arcs and the ending comes from the readers quoted, and most of them read the webtoon rather than the novel.
