Descent of the Demon Master Review: The Demon Tries Normal
The most feared man in the martial world dies on a battlefield, wakes up eighteen in a modern Korean hospital, and loses his first fight to a vending machine.
out of 10
Verdict: Worth the 20 free chapters if you want a murim legend stuck in slice-of-life. Skip it for sect wars: readers say the can't-act-normal jokes repeat and the plot slows by chapter 50.

Descent of the Demon Master review, short version: the first eight chapters are better than the premise, and the premise is what decides whether you'll stay. Wolbaek's hero is the leader of the Heavenly Demon Cult. He dies with six weapons in him, then wakes up as Kang Jin-Ho, an eighteen-year-old car-crash patient in modern Korea. He wants one thing, an ordinary life, and the novel spends most of its time on that wish.

Wuxiaworld lists it as a Korean novel by Wolbaek, translated by A Passing Wanderer and licensed from Bbulmedia, tagged Wuxia and Modern Setting, and Ongoing at 1,660 chapters as of October 29, 2026 (1,654 when we first checked on October 23; it adds about one a day).

Is it really murim?
The past life is. The prologue happens in gangho, which the translator's footnote explains as "also known as jianghu in Chinese web novels." The factions are the familiar Chinese-style cast of Korean murim: the Heavenly Demon Cult, Shaolin, Wudang, the Namgung Clan and the Tang Family's poison. If that mix of Korean storytelling and Chinese place names seems odd, our murim vs wuxia guide explains where it comes from.
Everything after the prologue happens in present-day Korea, so this sits with the returner stories rather than the sect dramas. There's a comic too. Wuxiaworld reviewer KuroBento arrived "hyped" after reading it, and r/manhwa threads discuss it under the title Descent of the Demonic Master.
What we read: chapters 1 to 8
The prologue is the best chapter we read. The Heavenly Crimson Demon Emperor, "the first outsider in the Heavenly Demon Cult's one-thousand-year-long history" to lead it, stands on a red plain with a sword through his gut. His right-hand man, Blue Demon Guo Yue, gathered "twenty-nine absolute powerhouses" and poisoned him first, because the cult leader had promised to give his cultivation technique, the Records of Asura, "to anyone under the heavens wishing to learn it." Dying, he pulls out the sword he once gave Guo Yue as a reward ("I gave this to you once before") and slowly returns it. His last line before that is the novel's thesis: "I... never forget my grudges."
Chapters 2 to 4 are a hospital comedy with something sad under it. He has died at thirty-five and woken at eighteen. In his first life, a car crash killed his family and left him paraplegic for fifteen years before he ever saw gangho. Now his mother is alive and nagging him, and he decides he'd rather "fight hundreds of the Ten Sect's elites" than sit through another lecture.
Then the cola. Chapter 3 calls Coca-Cola "the best invention of modern civilization," the one thing he could never cook in the past. The vending machine keeps spitting out his 10,000 won note until a ten-year-old heart patient named Ji-Eun buys him a can and names him "Oppa from outer space." His first sip in chapter 4 is a choking "...Keuk!" He finishes the can and gives himself a rule to go with the old one: "I also never forget kindness, either."

Chapters 5 to 7 pay both rules off. An escaped serial killer takes Ji-Eun hostage in the hospital lobby, and Kang Jin-Ho walks out of the crowd and takes him down. He still gets cut, because his new body is shorter and slower than the one his instincts remember. In chapter 4 he had already decided not to rebuild his dantian, since "a nail inside your pocket was bound to prick your hand sooner or later." By chapter 8 his family has settled on amnesia as the explanation for the new Jin-Ho, and the school arc begins.
Grudges, Kindness and a Soda Can
His goal is small: a second try with the family he lost in his first life, plus an ordinary routine, and chapters 1 to 8 stay that small.
Two rules drive him, repaying grudges and repaying kindness. The cola turns into a hostage rescue, and in chapter 7 he asks Ji-Eun's mother what she'd do if the girl's heart condition went away.
The culture-shock jokes land because the novel told you first what he went through. A man who spent decades in a world without science stares at a soda can, wondering how anyone dissolved carbon dioxide in water.
Where It Drags, by Chapter 50
The joke repeats. Buiny's Wuxiaworld review is still marked Recommended, but its edit says: "It's only been around 50 chapters and I'm already lowering my rating to 6/10 due to boredom." Buiny's main complaint is "2 chapters of you failing driving tests" from a man who once conquered gangho. Denia (Not recommended) was blunter: "The first chapter was awesome. The rest were kinda boring, i had to drop it."
There isn't much fighting, either, though the talk we found on Reddit is about the comic, not the novel, so treat it as a hint. On r/manhwa, u/JakolZeroOne called it "a slice of life with a little action mixed in," and u/Jomgui warned that "it has a heavy focus on the MC learning how to live in society." Not everyone minded: u/DiosGrief said "it kept me reading" and gave it 8 out of 10.
Chapters 1 to 20 open in full without an account; chapter 21 shows a teaser. After that, Wuxiaworld gives two free chapters every 23 hours. As of October 29, 2026, the chapter list has titles up to 1610, and chapters 1611 to 1660 are listed without them, which matches the 50 advance chapters on the site's top sponsor tier. The 1,590 titled chapters after the free run would take more than two years to unlock on the timer alone.
Descent of the Demon Master Review: Who Should Read It
Read it if you want the reverse of the stories in our transmigrated into murim list: a murim man dropped into the modern world instead of a modern man dropped into murim. It also suits you if the hospital arc above sounds like fun rather than filler. It's already the long-haul pick on our murim OP MC shortlist. New to the genre? Start with what murim means.
Skip it if you want sect politics and duels every few chapters. The Regressor of Mount Hua keeps its hero inside the martial world and is complete in English.
Our take: 6.5 out of 10. The prologue and hospital arc are good enough to justify the 20 free chapters. Stop at chapter 20 if the school chapters from 8 onward already feel like the same joke: around chapter 50, Buiny was still waiting for the plot to move.
How we checked this
For this Descent of the Demon Master review, on October 23, 2026 we read chapters 1 to 8 on Wuxiaworld, opened chapters 10, 20 and 21 to check where the free run ends, and went through the series page, its three visible reviews and the chapter list on Wuxiaworld Lite. On October 29 we rechecked the series page and the last page of the chapter list for the current count. We also read three r/manhwa threads about the comic. We haven't read past chapter 8, so everything about later arcs comes from the readers quoted, and the Reddit ones read the comic rather than the novel.
