Martial World Review: Earnest, Hard-Working, Very Long

Lin Ming earns his first power-up with a boning knife, and that work ethic is the best thing in the opening.

Verdict: Read the free chapters if you want a straight, earnest underdog story with a cheat that costs him something; skip it if stiff prose and a 2,276-chapter commitment sound like homework.

2,276 chapters · Completed · Wuxiaworld · How we score

Martial World is the earnest one. We read chapters 0 to 5 on Wuxiaworld on October 13, 2026, and its hero, Lin Ming, gets his edge from ten years of cutting up animals in his parents' restaurant. That's a more grounded reason than this genre usually bothers with. The cheat that arrives in chapter 2 nearly eats his mind before it helps him. The prose is stiff and the villains are cardboard, but the listing's 82 from 225 reviews makes sense once you see how sincere it is.

Martial World Review: Chapters 0 to 5

Chapter 0 is a prologue somewhere far above the main story. A wounded saintess, Mo Eversnow, is cornered in a frozen realm by over 10,000 pursuers who want her Divine Crystal Magic Cube. She sends her sister away, pours her soul into the cube, and takes every one of them with her. The cube disappears into the void.

Chapter 1 drops all the way down to Lin Ming, fifteen, third-grade talent, punching an ironwood tree until there's blood on the bark. His childhood sweetheart has taken a place at the better academy, arranged by a rich young master named Zhu Yan. When they meet at registration, Zhu Yan offers him "A thousand gold taels!" to disappear, and Lin Ming answers with a speech about "the heart of a martial artist." It's sincere, which helps, because it isn't subtle.

Chapter 2 is where the book earns its place. Kicked out of his room by a rival's thug, Lin Ming walks into a restaurant far too posh for him, the Grand Clarity Pavilion, and asks for a job. When the waiter asks what he can do, he says "Deboning." Then he takes apart a Scaled Draconic Beast "worth over a hundred gold liangs" with an ordinary boning knife, names his price, and gets it.

Inside a Goldback Pangolin that night, his knife hits a grey cube covered in black inscriptions. In chapter 3 he dreams the prologue's battle, touches the smallest fragment of soul floating inside the cube, and nearly loses himself; he wakes in soaked sheets with his palms bleeding from his own nails. What he gets for it is a complete body-training manual from a higher realm, and chapter 4 lets him practise it for three days before anything else happens. By chapter 5 a second young master is demanding he "lick my soles clean," and Lin Ming turns it into a public duel in the square so the bully can't back out.

The deboning thread is what we'd keep. The book treats strength and precision as different skills (punching trees for one, cutting meat for the other), and the cube's manual rewards the second. That's a small, real idea in a genre that usually hands the hero everything.

The Translation and the Villains

You'll notice the translation. Early chapters open with "Translated by Podao!", the narration switches tense mid-paragraph, and units get converted in brackets: "three hundred jin (181.4 kg)", "half a long hour (1 hour)". It's readable, just never smooth.

The villains are worse. Zhu Yan, the monkey-eared thug, and Wang Yigao in chapter 5 are the same sneer with different names. If you've read Battle Through the Heavens, you've met all three.

What Readers Say About the Long Haul

Wuxiaworld reader reviews of Martial World: DuskMaiden and TypicalReader, both Recommended, seven years old

Screenshot: reader reviews on the Wuxiaworld listing, October 13, 2026

The listing reviews are love letters. TypicalReader calls it "the novel that started it all for me" and admits "(I once went an entire day without sleep just to read this.)" Pareilia gives the fairest summary of the cheat: "While the magic cube is definitely an overpowered trump card in many cases, Lin Ming still has to rely on his own wits and strength to progress."

Reddit is more mixed, and more useful. A September 2024 thread about being "nostalgia baited" by old novels turned into a Martial World argument.

  • zimojovic: "My first novel Xianxia was Martial World , and to this day i still think it is one of better novels."
  • genshinplayer27: "Indeed, imo Martial World is very good, if not for the romance, or the rushed ending I would put the novel among my favourites."
  • Unfamous_Trader, the other side: "We just grew up and realized how trashy these empty calorie novels are"

We'd take genshinplayer27's line as the warning label: the romance and the ending are the two things fans themselves flag.

How Long It Is and What's Free

The listing says Completed, 2,276 chapters, licensed from Yuewen, and tags it Xuanhuan with Romance, Tragedy, Alchemy and Cooking among others. Chapters 0 to 50 opened in full without an account when we checked; chapter 51 came up as a locked teaser.

After that the timer is 2 chapters every 23 hours. Our arithmetic: the remaining 2,225 entries at that rate take about 1,066 days, close to three years. It's sixth on our completed Chinese web novels list; if three years sounds long, our guide to whether Wuxiaworld is worth paying for runs the numbers.

There's also a follow-up. True Martial World, by the same author, is on WebNovel as a separate 1,710-chapter completed series with its own translator, CKtalon. Mild spoiler: its synopsis opens on "the Human Emperor, Lin Ming," so you know roughly where this one goes.

Martial World Review Verdict: 6.5/10

We'd read the free 51 entries if you like the straight underdog shape and want a hero who works for it. The deboning chapter and the cube's near-fatal first gift are better than the genre average, and fans who stayed say the world keeps opening up. We'd skip it if stiff translation bothers you, because it won't get much smoother early on, or if you need villains who are more than a sneer. At 2,276 chapters, let the free run decide.

How We Checked This

For this Martial World review we read chapters 0 to 5 of the Wuxiaworld translation on October 13, 2026, checked that chapter 50 opens and chapter 51 is locked, captured the listing and its reader reviews, read the Reddit thread's top comments, and opened the True Martial World page on WebNovel (13 pages in all, each fact matched to a saved copy).
