Murim Novel With OP MC: Five Picks Worth Starting Today

These are actual novels with official English translations, not webtoons, so pick by how the hero got strong and how much reading you're signing up for.

5 min readLast reviewed By Mei-Lin Zhao

Verdict: Start with The Regressor of Mount Hua, the best-reviewed of the five and complete at 435 chapters; take The Sword Emperor Transmigrates if you'd rather watch a murim master loose in a Western-fantasy family.

If you want a murim novel with OP MC energy in actual prose, go to Wuxiaworld: it holds the licensed English editions, and after going through its catalogue these are the five Korean martial-arts novels we'd hand you. Choose by where the hero's edge comes from, because that decides what the fights feel like. A man who already lived the war plays a long game; a master dropped into a strange world plays a fish-out-of-water comedy with a sword.

How to Pick a Murim Novel With OP MC Energy

Murim is the martial world of sects, clans and the orthodox-versus-demonic split. The word is borrowed: Chinese jianghu and wulin "have been borrowed into Korean as gangho (강호) and murim (무림) to refer to fiction set in Chinese-inspired martial arts worlds." Jimrayner_811 put the reader's version more bluntly on r/noveltranslations: "The 'murim' in these novels is just a term for a martial arts society with some fixed factions like orthodox/unorthodox/demonic." Our what is murim explainer covers the vocabulary, and murim vs wuxia shows what Korean writers built out of the Chinese original.

Our test for an OP lead: does anything push back that raw strength can't solve? Three of these stay inside the murim; two move the master somewhere else and let the contrast do the work.

1. The Regressor of Mount Hua: Start Here

Pick it if you want a regression novel done patiently; skip it if you need the hero strong by chapter five. We read the prologue and chapter 1 on October 16, and the hook is how unheroic the first life was. Zhou Xuchuan dies a high elder of Mount Hua only because the wars killed everyone better, and the cruelest line is his own: "I just rose to the Harmony Realm a few days ago…" Then his master shakes him awake: "Zhou Xuchuan, eight years old. Fourth generation disciple of Mount Hua." He remembers the War of Factions before it starts, and the chapter ends on a far less noble vow about women, which tells you the tone. It's by JUN, translated by Cyncoco, and it's finished.

It's also the one webcomic readers may already know. The synopsis closes with "Welcome To the Volcanic Age", and reviewer Moose99zulu (Recommended) realised "this is the webnovel of an online webcomic called volcanic age." We'd rank it first for that reason too: you can check the art, then read the whole story in prose.

2. The Sword Emperor Transmigrates: Murim Master, Wrong Continent

Pick it if you like the murim hero as an outsider; skip it if reincarnation openings already tire you. The Sword Emperor's last fight is a challenge to "the Heavenly Demon, the generation's strongest man in murim", and he loses his life for it. He wakes "as a member of the Cardenas family, the continent's best swordsman family!" McEnroe wrote it, Castor and Nekogami translated it. Readers split cleanly here. Great Mana Valley (Recommended) liked "a recarnation type beginning with a lack of foolishness that is usually a part of the trope"; Baccharis (Not recommended) felt the potential collapsed into "yet another generic murim novel with reincarnation." We'd read the first arc and decide there; both reviewers agree it starts well. If you'd rather have the trip the other way, an outsider landing in murim, we ranked those in transmigrated into murim novels.

3. Descent of the Demon Master: The Long Haul

Pick it if you want one book to last you months; skip it if slice-of-life detours bore you. Wolbaek's novel is tagged Wuxia and Modern Setting, and the premise is the oldest joke in OP fiction: the great Demon Master only "wished to live a new, ordinary life", and the world keeps provoking him. It's the only ongoing pick and by far the longest, with two free chapters a day instead of one. Denia (Not recommended) is the warning: "The first chapter was awesome. The rest were kinda boring, i had to drop it." KuroBento (Recommended) came over from the comic and was hooked. We'd treat the pacing as the real cost: this is comfort reading, not a tight story.

Wondering whether the free-chapter timer is enough, or whether to pay?

4. Thunder God's Reincarnation: The Most Murim of the Five

Pick it for clan betrayal and a hero on his last life; skip it if you read for atmosphere. "After defeating the Hell-Blood Demon who drove the entire murim to chaos, the patriarchs of the Seven Great Clans betrayed him and killed him." He comes back "for the ninth time as Baek Mu-Gun", and that's the last life the spell allows, which puts a clock on all that strength. Kim Dohun wrote it, Nekogami translated it. The best criticism is specific: Rimo123 (Not recommended, by chapter 9) said it struggles with "Inciting emotions, building tension, and describing an immersive picture." We'd pick it for plot, not prose.

The thread above helps explain why the English shelf is this thin. Yasi_ guessed "it's like 12 martial arts novels to 720 novels of every other type released per year" in Korea and called the genre "a niche". That's one reader's estimate, not a statistic, but it fits what we found: five real fits in Wuxiaworld's whole catalogue.

5. The Undefeatable Swordsman: Classic Tropes, Done Warmly

Pick it if you miss old-school murim; skip it if you want anything new. Song Woo-Moon is "the son of a simple inn owner in the countryside", "teased as being the village fool" for years, until the day he turns twenty and "the supreme martial arts within the landscape painting!" wake inside him. Red Sunset wrote it; it's the shortest here. The reviewer called bow to your sect master (Recommended) is honest about the price: "Yes it has some common tropes, classic females, mysterious parent origin story, OP characters appearing randomly". We'd still take it over a newer, colder book if you want the genre's comfort food.

What About the Murim Webtoons?

The series most people mean by "murim" (Return of the Blossoming Blade, Nano Machine, Return of the Mad Demon) reach English as webtoons. Nano Machine's creator HANJUNG WOLYA introduces himself on its WEBTOON page as "a webnovel writer", and Return of the Mad Demon credits its original work to Yu jin sung, but neither story is in Wuxiaworld's catalogue, so there's no official English prose to send you to. The same gap holds for A Modern Man Transmigrated Into the Murim World: no English publisher has licensed it yet, novel or webtoon. For the comics themselves, ChapterBrief's ranking of the best martial arts manhwa is the better guide.

Our Take: Which Murim Novel With OP MC to Start

Start with The Regressor of Mount Hua. It's complete, it has the warmest reader score of the five, and the first chapter already sets up the grudge, the foreknowledge and the joke. If you want the master out of his element, go to The Sword Emperor Transmigrates next. Save Descent of the Demon Master for when you want something to read every day for a season. And if you wonder why so much of this genre lives in comics instead, is murim Chinese or Korean traces where it came from.

How We Checked This

On October 16, 2026 we went through Wuxiaworld's novel catalogue (its sitemap and the synopsis of every Korean series), read the five series pages, their reviews and the prologue and chapter 1 of The Regressor of Mount Hua, and rechecked the two WEBTOON pages, Wikipedia's jianghu article and the r/noveltranslations thread. On October 20 we reopened the series pages for the table above: only Descent of the Demon Master's chapter count had moved. Apart from that chapter, the picks rest on the official synopses and named reader reviews, not on our own reading.
