Battle Through the Heavens Review: The Book Everyone Copied

A public humiliation, a glowing ring and a fiancée who wants out, all inside five chapters: the fallen-genius formula at its cleanest.

Verdict: Read the free chapters if you've never had the fallen-genius story done straight; skip it if you've already read three books that borrowed from it, because the opening will feel like a rerun.

1,648 chapters · Completed · Wuxiaworld · How we score

If you've read a cultivation novel where a fallen genius gets laughed at during a public test and then his fiancée arrives to break off the engagement, you've probably read something that borrowed from this one. We read chapters 1 to 5 of Battle Through the Heavens on Wuxiaworld on October 13, 2026, and the whole kit is there in five chapters: the "trash" test, the one girl who still believes in him, the mother's ring, the engagement cancelled in front of the clan. It still works. The translation is rough, and the listing's 70 from 144 reviews feels fair: a strong start you'll recognise, not a great book.

Battle Through the Heavens Review: Chapters 1 to 5

Chapter 1, "Genius No More", opens on a glowing stone. The Magical Testing Monument reads out "Xiao Yan, Dou Zhi Li, 3rd stage! Rank: Low!" and the square does the rest: "Ai, this piece of trash really disgraced his entire clan." The backstory arrives through a girl in the crowd. At 11 he'd broken the 10th stage and become the youngest Dou Zhe in the clan in a hundred years; three years ago it all vanished in one night. Then Xiao Mei, not more than 14, scores 7th stage, Xiao Xun Er scores 9th, and Xun Er walks straight past the applause to stand next to him: "Brother Xiao Yan."

Chapter 2 has the twist you'd expect from the genre and gets it over with fast. Lying on a cliff at night, Xiao Yan admits the secret: "He was from a deep blue star called Earth." His father, the clan leader, tells him there's one year until the Adulthood Ceremony and he needs 7th stage by then. Xiao Yan does the maths himself: "4 stages in 1 year?" And on the last line, the plain black ring his late mother gave him lights up.

That ring is the smartest thing in the opening. In chapter 3 it sparkles while he meditates, and moments later his freshly absorbed Dou Qi drains away again. You know where his power is going before he does, and that bit of dramatic irony carries you through the slower scenes.

Chapter 3 is also where the book is funniest. The clan elders leave him without a seat in front of the guests, Xun Er calls "Brother Xiao Yan, come sit here!" across the hall, and then she casually mentions that someone used to sneak into her room every night when she was 4 to 6 to strengthen her bones and meridians. His answer, "Uhh… how, how am I supposed to know?", is the closest the opening comes to a joke, and it lands.

Chapters 4 and 5 deliver the famous part. The guests are from the Faction of Misty Clouds, the strongest power in the Jia Ma Empire, and the girl with them is Nalan Yanran, his fiancée since before he was born. She's here to cancel. When the elder Ge Ye makes the request, Xiao Zhan's jade cup "turned into a fine mist in an instant", his lion-headed Dou Qi flares, the clan elders shout him down, and the faction offers a box of Qi Gathering Powder as an apology. Chapter 5 ends on the box, and Xiao Yan hasn't said a word to her yet. That's a good place to stop a chapter.

What Drags: Ranks, Looks and the Translation

Chapter 2 stops dead for a lecture. Techniques are split into four classes, Tian, Di, Xuan and Huang, each again into Beginner, Medium and High, with three separate criteria for who wins a fight. It's a page of pinyin before you've had a reason to care. The narration also ranks every girl's looks against the last one ("she was prettier than Xiao Mei"), which gets old by chapter 3.

The translation shows its age. Chapter 1 ends in the translator's own notes, including "I think" and "not sure why the wording is changed". The hero is printed as "Xiao Yao" five times in chapter 3, and typos like "acculmulating" and "abadon" were still there when we read. None of it stops the story, but you'll notice.

The Pinyin Ranks: What Readers Argued About

Readers were complaining about the ladder in 2016, in an r/noveltranslations thread titled "Why is the power-scaling in this novel so over the top?"

  • Iramohs: "The real problem is that all the power levels sound similar(Dou Haung, Dou Qi, Dou Wang, Da Dou Shi)."
  • _The_Reader: "Can't they subsitute English words for those rankings?"
  • assuming123, the other side: "Personally it gives me a feeling of immersion."

We side with Iramohs, but it matters less now: Wuxiaworld underlines names and terms in the chapter text and lets you click one to look it up, which is most of what that thread was asking for.

What the Reader Reviews Warn About

Wuxiaworld reader reviews of Battle Through the Heavens: Galaleo15 (VIP) and FrustratedReader, both Recommended, seven years old

Screenshot: reader reviews on the Wuxiaworld listing, October 13, 2026

The two top reviews are both marked Recommended, and both are warnings. Galaleo15 opens with "BTTH is just okay.", says "The writing can get really repetitive in the later chapters and the peanut gallery is very present", and still recommends it, "especially the manhua." FrustratedReader is warmer about the start, "The first 700 chapters are awesome.", and specific about the end: "the repetitiveness of this novel starts from around 1100 chapter."

Two fans who liked it pointing at the same back half is the signal we'd trust most. The opening is the good part; plan on the last third being a slog.

The listing says Completed, 1,648 chapters, licensed from Yuewen, translated by goodguyperson, whose last notice ("BTTH 1643-1648!") is nine years old. Chapters 1 to 50 opened in full without an account when we checked; chapter 51 came up locked.

After that the timer is 2 free chapters every 23 hours. Our arithmetic: the remaining 1,598 chapters at that rate take about 766 days, a little over two years. That's why it sits fifth on our completed Chinese web novels list, and why our look at whether Wuxiaworld is worth paying for is worth a read before you commit.

The original title is 斗破苍穹, Dòupò Cāngqióng, literally "Fight Through The Sky", and it became a 2018 Hunan TV series starring Leo Wu. If you came from the animation, our novel vs donghua guide covers what changes.

Battle Through the Heavens Review Verdict: 7/10

We'd read the free 50 chapters if you've never had the fallen-genius story done straight. This is the clean version: the test, the ring, the broken engagement, no detours. Readers have been spotting its shape in other books for years; one Reddit thread is simply titled "Eternal martial sovereign copies BTTH?" We'd skip it if you've read Martial World or The Great Ruler and want something new, because the first five chapters will feel like a rerun. For something stranger, try I Shall Seal the Heavens.

How We Checked This

For this Battle Through the Heavens review we read chapters 1 to 5 of the Wuxiaworld translation on October 13, 2026, checked that chapter 50 opens and chapter 51 is locked, captured the listing and its reader reviews, read the Reddit thread's top comments and the subreddit search, and opened the Wikipedia page on the TV series and the WebNovel cover (12 pages in all, each fact matched to a saved copy).
