A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality Review
Five chapters in, Han Li has no cheat, no talent and no backing, and that's the point.
out of 10
Verdict: Read it if you're tired of chosen-one heroes and can take a slow, plain start; skip it if you need a fight or a power-up inside the first ten chapters.

A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality is the anti-chosen-one book, and you can tell inside a page. We read chapters 1 to 5 on Wuxiaworld on October 13, 2026. The hero's village nickname is "Second Fool", his parents traded two pieces of cornbread for his real name, and he fails the sect's entrance climb. Nobody hands him a ring, a grandpa in his head or a hidden bloodline. It's slow and plain, and that's exactly why one of its biggest fans on Wuxiaworld calls it the best novel on the site.

A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality Review: Chapters 1 to 5
Chapter 1 is a farm. Han Li is ten, the fourth of five children, sleeping next to a snoring brother under a quilt so old "its original color could no longer be distinguished." His big plan for tomorrow is to pick more red berries for his little sister. Then his Third Uncle, a restaurant manager in town who has just become an outer disciple of the Seven Mysteries Sect, turns up with the right to nominate one child between 7 and 12 for the Inner Disciple Examinations. Han Li's father agrees when he hears the words "monthly allowance".
The book is honest about what this is. Han Li bites his lip to keep from crying on the carriage and plans to go home "after he struck rich." The last paragraph tells you money will soon "lose any meaning to him", and that's the only grand line in the chapter.
Chapter 2 lets the world show its teeth. A customer in Third Uncle's restaurant jokes that the boy might be "a child from a prostitute", and the room laughs. Protector Wang arrives in a black carriage, asks "Is this the child you wanted to nominate?", and only relaxes after Third Uncle slips him a heavy pouch. The chapter also stops for a long history of the sect and its rival, the Feral Wolf Gang. You can skim it.
Chapter 3 is where we started to like it. About thirty children are packed into a carriage built for ten, and Han Li sorts them into three groups by clothes and manners: Wu Yan, a 13-year-old from a dojo family who's over the age limit but has a cousin married into the sect; the city kids sucking up to him; and the handful of village kids like Han Li, who keep quiet.

Chapter 4 is the test, and it's the best chapter of the five. Climb through a bamboo forest, up a crumbling rock slope and then the Bone Refining Cliff by noon. Han Li crawls on his belly, tears his knees open, nearly falls, and ends up sitting on the first knot of a rope, unable to move. Wu Yan, already at the top, gives the stragglers a thumbs down. Han Li doesn't make it.
In chapter 5 a senior disciple carries him up. Seven children pass; Wu Yan goes straight to the elite division, and one senior grumbles that it's only because of "his older cousin being married to Vice Sect Leader Ma". Han Li and another failure, Zhang Tie, get six months as Unofficial Disciples. Then a coughing old man, Doctor Mo, picks the two of them out of the line as an alchemy apprentice and an herb gatherer and walks them into God Hand Valley, where other disciples don't go unless they're sick or hurt. That's where our five chapters end, and it's a good hook precisely because nobody explains it.
What We Liked, and What Drags
What we'd keep is the realism. Han Li isn't secretly brilliant; the book says "Physically, Han Li was very ordinary," and the test proves it. The sect isn't a school, it's a business with bribes, nepotism and seniors who gossip about the Vice Sect Leader when they think no one can hear. Five chapters in, there's no magic, no cultivation technique and no system. If you've read Battle Through the Heavens or Martial World, you'll notice how much this one refuses to give its hero.
What drags is the same thing. Chapter 2's sect history is a page of names, provinces and old feuds. Nothing supernatural happens by chapter 5, and the prose is clear but flat. The translation itself is clean, with short footnotes (one explains that "Second Fool" sounds nicer in Mandarin than it means).
What Readers Say

Screenshot: reader reviews on the Wuxiaworld listing, October 13, 2026
The top listing review, by Immortal Galaxy Tree (Recommended), sells it as a book "for people sick of harems" and arrogant young masters, then warns: "The novel starts off very slow, but I urge you to give it a try." Matusela (Recommended) calls it "Best novel of WW in my opinion" and says the same thing: "Starts slow but you have to endure". chacal20 (Recommended) has one complaint, that it focuses "a lot in magical weapons."
The 2020 r/noveltranslations Nostalgia Series thread on the book is mostly fans, with one useful warning.
- ddggdd: "Han Li is the best pragmatic and cautious protagonist, he has little to no cheats in the overall xianxia schemes"
- seniormartialbrother: "most of HL's character development happens within the first 50 chapters"
- Broken_Maverick: "Also, it's definitely slow. Really, really slow. But it's also really well written"
All three listing reviews and Broken_Maverick say "slow" without being asked. We'd believe them, and we'd also note seniormartialbrother's point: if Han Li's character is set inside 50 chapters, the free run shows you most of who he'll be.

After that the timer gives 4 free chapters every 23 hours, double the 2 that Battle Through the Heavens gets. Our arithmetic: the remaining 2,405 chapters take about 576 days at that rate, a little over a year and a half. That's still long, but well under the roughly three years we worked out for Martial World, and worth knowing before you read our Wuxiaworld paywall breakdown.
The original is 凡人修仙传, Fánrén xiūxiān chuán, written by Wang Yu on Qidian between 2008 and 2013. The donghua is a different experience, and our novel vs donghua guide covers what it changes.
A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality Review Verdict: 7.5/10
We'd read it if you're tired of chosen-one heroes. The farm, the bribe, the failed climb and the odd doctor who picks up the rejects make a quieter opening than any of the books we've read for these reviews (see our best xianxia list for where it sits), and the four-chapter free timer makes the long run less of a wall. We'd skip it if you need a fight or a power-up early: five chapters in, Han Li has done nothing but climb, fail and get lucky once. For something darker in the same patient mould, try Renegade Immortal.
