Keyboard Immortal Review: Trolling as a Cultivation Method
A cultivation comedy that knows every trope and plays them for laughs, crude jokes included.
out of 10
Verdict: Read it if you're tired of grim cultivation and can handle lewd jokes; it costs nothing but a free account. Skip it if a hero who leers at every woman will wear on you.

Keyboard Immortal Review: Chapters 1 to 5
Zu An is in the middle of "trolling the absolute shit out of a bunch of users on a forum" when ball lightning comes through his window. He wakes up in another world, being examined by a coroner, with a floating keyboard and a voice telling him to collect secret manuals from the "Twelve Unknown Regions" to unlock its F1 to F12 keys.
The body he's in belongs to the "useless son-in-law of the Chu clan", who married into the family of the Brightmoon Duke and, the crowd says, "on his wedding night, he actually snuck into his sister-in-law's bed". His new wife, Chu Chuyan, is beautiful, cold, and secretly reading a romance novel titled "Sweet Pampered Wife: Dominating Sword Immortal's Ninety-Nine Days of Searching For Love".
Chapters 2 and 3 are a quick run of setups. Her maid Snow kicks him into a pond to drown him; he can swim and she can't, so he drags her under, then gives her CPR just as his wife walks in. A failed night with Snow reveals a seal on his body that has left him unable to perform, and he's halfway to hanging himself from a tree when an old gardener, Old Mi, offers a way out: a technique that levels up only when he gets beaten up. Chapter 4 lets you in on the gardener's plan, which is to possess Zu An's body once he's trained in the same art. Zu An doesn't know that.

The scroll unlocks the keyboard's Rage system: Zu An earns points by making people angry, and spends them on a lottery. His first three draws are "Thanks for playing!", a steel-wool pad called the "Heiress Ball of Delights", and a dagger named "Poisonous Prick". In chapter 5 his sister-in-law, Chu Huanzhao, storms in, and he mocks her name for "666 Rage points", then lectures her into fury until she punches him onto the bed.
The Jokes, and Who They're For
The book's best trick is that Zu An has read the same web novels you have. When Old Mi appears, he thinks "I know this trope!" and decides the gardener must be a hidden master. The reader knows Old Mi is a eunuch looking for a new body. The joke is on the genre-savvy hero, and it gives the comedy a plot underneath it.
The worst of it is that so many jokes land below the belt. In the first five chapters the hero checks what the lightning did to his body, clings to a drowning maid like an octopus, and nearly kills himself over a sealed groin, with the narration going for laughs each time. The translator's own note at the end of chapter 1 sets expectations: "Comedy", "Ecchi scenes + Harem", "A not very upright protagonist". If you're reading this after Nine Star Hegemon, the humour is smarter but the same flavour.
What Readers Say

Screenshot: reader reviews on the Wuxiaworld listing, October 13, 2026
The listing score is 69 from 307 reviews. RWX, the Wuxiaworld admin, called it "the perfect mixture of early Against the Gods (minus the edgelord stuff) and I'm Really A Superstar", and listed its words as "fun", "ridiculous", "trolling" and "lewd". TypicalReader recommends it "If you are burned out from the intense cultivation novels".
Reddit is split, and the 2021 thread "why didn't you guys tell me about KEYBOARD IMMORTAL?" shows both sides.
- Gk786: "Its so insanely funny at times that I marvel at the ability of the translator to translate the jokes into english so well."
- Cosmic-Gore: "Didn't like keyboard immortal at all, MC was practically a sex driven puppet."
- Devourer_of_HP: "I enjoyed the trolling but hated how horny the mc is."
- drexv27, in 2025 on r/wuxiaworld: "the comedy is no longer there, and it just turn into your typical OP MC".

The newest chapters are a different matter: chapter 2953 was marked "Early access chapter for Champions" and showed only a teaser. The translator's two latest notices are "Keyboard Immortal Lowering Updates to 5/week" and "Keyboard Immortal Unstable Updates". Our Wuxiaworld paywall breakdown explains the account tiers.
Keyboard Immortal Review Verdict: 7/10
We'd read it if you're tired of grim, serious cultivation and want a hero who wins by being annoying. A free account gets you the lot. We'd skip it if a lead who leers at every woman will wear on you, because five chapters in he hasn't stopped. For a darker read, try Against the Gods or Realm Walker; for an overview, see the best xuanhuan in English.
