Radiant Blade of the Wilderness Power System Explained
Nobody hands Ding Songyan a realm chart. He picks it up from a storyteller, his cousin, a friend and a girl with a serpent's tail, and so do you.
Verdict: Six working realms, Initial to Spirit Platform, plus two more named in chapter 53. The twist: eating a divine beast can jump you to Grandmaster, then strand you there. Chapters 1-63 on Webnovel set it all up.
The Radiant Blade of the Wilderness power system never arrives as a chart. If you're twenty chapters in and still can't say whether a Grandmaster outranks a Supreme Master, that's on purpose. Ding Songyan, who wakes up in chapter 1 in the body of a young storyteller, collects it in pieces: street gossip about rankings in chapter 6, his cousin's lecture in chapter 15, a friend's explanation in chapter 18, a warning from a girl with a serpent's tail in chapter 31.

We put those pieces in one place. Everything below comes from chapters 1 to 63, the run that opened in full on Webnovel's website for us without logging in, and we cite the chapter for each rule so you can check it. One section near the end covers how Volume 1 ends; it's marked, and you can skip it.

The Radiant Blade of the Wilderness power system at a glance
Chapter 18 gives the working ladder of six realms. Ding sums up what he's learned in one line: "Initial Realm, Human Realm, Great Proliferation Realm, Dharma Realm, Heaven-Man Realm, Spirit Platform Realm." Chapter 53 names two more above Spirit Platform, the Mystic Realm and the Myriad Wonders Realm, in a story about Sages who tried and failed to get cultivators of the Useless Divine Art across "the greatest restriction imposed by the heaven and earth severance." The Orchid Rankings, the jianghu's official ladder, grade people inside the middle realms from ninth rank up to first.
| Realm | Other name | Orchid rank | What happens here | Chapter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Initial Realm | Mortal Realm | Not ranked | Body tempering and qi cultivation | 15 |
| Life Realm | Human Realm | 9th to 7th: Path Glimpsed, Hall Entered, Chamber Reached | Condensing apertures | 15 |
| Great Proliferation Realm | 6th to 3rd: Anomaly Manifested, Profound Discerned, Mortal Surpassed, Form Transfigured | Aperture forging | 18, 44 | |
| Dharma Realm | Grandmaster | 2nd and 1st: Subtlety Attuned, Spirit Resonated | 6, 50 | |
| Heaven-Man Realm | Supreme Master | Not ranked | "The first great divide between human and divine" | 6, 31 |
| Spirit Platform Realm | Sage | Not ranked | No more than fourteen alive | 6 |
| Mystic Realm | Not ranked | Named only, as a realm Sages hoped to cross into | 53 | |
| Myriad Wonders Realm | Not ranked | Named only, above the Mystic Realm | 53 |
The rank numbers in the middle of the table are our reading, and the chapters back them up. Chapter 15 gives the Lower Three Ranks as ninth to seventh. Chapter 18 gives the Great Proliferation Realm four ranks, and chapter 44 calls Anomaly Manifested "the sixth rank," so Form Transfigured lands on third. Chapter 50 has a "second-rank Subtlety Attuned Grandmaster," and chapter 44 mentions "a first-rank Grandmaster," which fills the last two slots.
Above Grandmaster the ranking stops. The street version in chapter 6 says Supreme Masters and Sages are "too few and too rare to be ranked at all." Xiao Qing corrects that in chapter 31: "The Orchid Rankings don't include Supreme Masters... Not because Supreme Masters are too few, but because the rankings aren't worthy." Common opinion, according to chapter 6, puts the scale this way: a Grandmaster can anchor a prefecture, a Supreme Master guard a province, and a Sage protect a nation. The world holds "no more than fourteen Sages: ten of the orthodox paths and four of the heretical paths."
Where martial arts come from: eaten gods
Every art in this world starts with something divine. Xu Chang'an, Ding's friend, says it flat out in chapter 18: "All martial arts in our Mountains-and-Seas Realm either descend from Celestial Thearchs and gods, or were created from consuming divine beasts." Ding's sister puts it more vividly in chapter 3. Most arts trace back to creatures from before Emperor Zhuanxu severed heaven and earth, and if you cultivate far enough, the body changes. Some people's ears go tiger-like, some grow golden feathers, some turn blue-skinned, some grow ox horns or a fox's tail.
The book at the center of Ding's story, the Secret Classic of Mountains and Seas, is built on the same idea. It lists beasts with a line called "the result of consuming it?" In chapter 12 he notices the entries come in five, four, three or two clauses, and that "almost everything called an 'Emperor' has five clauses." He reads that as a hierarchy, strongest first. The novel doesn't confirm it there; it's Ding's guess, and a good one to keep in mind.
Most of these beasts come straight from a real book. Our Shan Hai Jing explainer covers the Classic of Mountains and Seas and what its entries actually say.
Apertures: why you can't swap arts later
Pick freely early, then you're locked in. In chapter 15 Qin Nuansheng, Ding's cousin, says you can use any method you like for body tempering and qi cultivation in the Initial Realm. "But once you reach the Life Realm, you absolutely cannot condense apertures blindly." If a better art you find later needs apertures that overlap the ones you've already condensed, the two conflict. A mild case ends in a deviation; the worst ends in madness or death.
Chapter 15 gives one exception: "All martial arts related to jiao or snakes can be switched to the study of the true dragon." A lesser dragon art can grow into a higher one instead of clashing with it. The best-known holder of that lineage, Qin Nuansheng says, is the Six Dragon Sect of New Yu, which carries the Yinglong line.

The Great Proliferation Realm is where the system gets physical. Xu Chang'an explains in chapter 18 that the gods' and beasts' apertures aren't the same as a human's, so you have to create new ones. Forging them takes "needle-guiding, medicinal infusion, and sometimes even cutting open the body to implant rare metals and exotic alloys," and every art has its own forging method. Reaching Anomaly Manifested, the first of the four ranks, extends your lifespan. Cuttlefish says in his Volume 1 afterword (chapter 61) that this stage is where the book wants to spend its time: the usual body tempering and qi stages "can be covered relatively quickly," leaving room for aperture forging, "which may or may not be unique to this book."
Rank means what you've shown, not how many apertures you have
Orchid ranks are earned in fights. Chapter 15 says so directly: "Ranking isn't based on how many apertures you've condensed, but on actual combat performance." Only people with real talent or a known background get an official rank at all. The low ranks also don't guarantee much. The Human Realm got its name because the Lower Three Ranks "don't surpass ordinary people by that much," and "one slip or miscalculation, and a seventh-rank person can be killed by a ninth-rank one."
Heretics get their own list. Chapter 48 introduces the Nine Hells Ranking, nine prisons for the heretical paths. Its sixth, Death Intent Prison, corresponds to Form Transfigured, and its seventh, Malevolent God Prison, to Dharma Realm Grandmasters. So when the story calls someone "one of the Malevolent Gods," read it as a heretic Grandmaster.
Eating a divine beast: the shortcut and its ceiling
This is the rule the whole book turns on, and Xiao Qing lays it out in chapter 31. You only need a portion of a divine beast's essence; eat more and you risk a deviation, or worse. Depending on how much, it "grants you anywhere from around a year to over a decade of Grandmaster-level strength, at the perfected Dharma Realm." To keep that strength, you have to work out the matching cultivation method and finish it before the time runs out; otherwise your level and strength slip back. There's also a hard cap: "consuming a divine beast can at most bring you to the perfected Dharma Realm."

Yan Changqing, in chapter 33, adds the history: "Since the end of the Han dynasty, consuming divine beasts can only bring one to the Dharma Realm." He says seven or eight out of ten Grandmasters who got there this way stay stuck there. The novel has a living example of the upside, too. Chapter 6 says Feng Yining swallowed a phoenix egg as a child and was a Dharma Realm Grandmaster when she entered the jianghu at sixteen.
The swallow-a-power idea will feel familiar if you came from Cuttlefish's earlier books. Our Lord of the Mysteries sequences guide explains the potion ladder he built there, Sequence 9 down to 0.
That's the comparison readers make. In June 2026 on r/ProgressionFantasy, u/SleepingOwl00 wrote that Cuttlefish "has already established the power system" and that it's "kinda similar to LOTM, consume divine beast and power up." At the end of July, u/Papope8394 liked it less and called the system "very similar to LOTM," along with a complaint about info-dumping.
We'd put the difference this way. In Lord of the Mysteries the potion is the ladder. Here, eating is a shortcut that runs out at Grandmaster, and everything above it still has to be cultivated.
Spoiler: what Ding Songyan eats at the end of Volume 1
Skip this section if you haven't reached chapter 60.
For most of Volume 1 Ding has no powers of his own. Readers noticed: in June 2026 u/Willing_Koala8894 couldn't believe "it's been 25 chapters and MC still hasn't gotten powers yet." Cuttlefish explains the choice in the chapter 61 afterword: since the world is built around "the result of consuming it," the protagonist "had to consume something," so his early advance "would be a single leap to success." In chapter 60 he swallows the remains of Hundun, Chaos, and his Secret Classic entry has five clauses, the Emperor tier: "Establishing the Six Directions, Dividing the Four Seasons, Manifesting the Way and its Virtue, Banishing Demons and Warding Off Evil, and Bringing All Things Into Unity." The afterword says he has "jumped straight to the Grandmaster realm."
Combine that with chapter 31's rule and you can see the pressure going into Volume 2: borrowed Grandmaster strength only stays if the cultivator builds a real method in time. Our Hundun explainer covers the six legs and four wings the chapter borrows.
Is there a Radiant Blade of the Wilderness wiki?
There's a fan wiki on Fandom. In June, a moderator of r/RBOW, the novel's subreddit, asked readers to help fill it with power systems, martial arts and terminology, citing chapter numbers and marking spoilers. We couldn't load the wiki on October 23 (Fandom's bot check blocked us). On October 29 its Realms page loaded: it lists "eight known realms, from the lowest Initial Realm to the highest Myriad Wonders Realm," the same eight as chapters 18 and 53. The chapter citations above are still the check we'd use.
Our take on the Radiant Blade of the Wilderness power system
The Radiant Blade of the Wilderness power system is easier to follow once it's in one place: six working realms with two more named above them, nine ranks in the middle, and a shortcut with a ceiling. We like that every step costs something. Apertures lock you into an art, forging means cutting yourself open, and divine-beast power expires unless you earn it. If you want the verdict on the novel itself, our Radiant Blade of the Wilderness review has it, and the cultivation glossary covers words like qi, dantian and realm if they're new to you.
How we checked this
On October 23, 2026 we read chapters 1 to 6, 12, 15, 17 and 61 of Radiant Blade of the Wilderness on Webnovel in full, the closing scene of chapter 60, and the passages on realms, ranks and divine beasts in chapters 18, 26, 31, 33, 44, 48 and 50; on October 29 we added the realm passage in chapter 53 and the fan wiki's Realms page. We checked which chapters open on the website without logging in by following the chapter links from chapter 1: chapters 1 to 63 opened in full, and chapter 64 stopped partway and asked for the app. We also checked the novel page and read three Reddit threads. Rank numbers between the quoted ones are our inference from chapters 15, 18, 44 and 50, and we say so in the table. We haven't read past Volume 1, so later chapters may say more about the two top realms or rename these.
