Is Super Gene Worth Reading? Yes, for the First Sanctuary

Super Gene has one of the simplest hooks in web fiction: eat what you kill, watch a number go up. The question is how long a number can carry a story.

Verdict: Yes, for the first God's Sanctuary arc, if you like progression you can count; at 3,462 chapters, plan to stop when the loop wears thin, as the readers quoted here did.

Is Super Gene worth reading? Yes, for the first arc, if you like progression you can count. Twelve-Winged Dark Seraphim's novel has a clean hook: a broke teenager in a world where you get stronger by eating what you kill, and a lucky find that makes the monsters better food. Readers who stayed long say the loop repeats for a very long time, so treat the first God's Sanctuary as the book and the rest as optional.

The novel is Super Gene (超级神基因, Chaoji Shen Jiyin, also called Super God Gene). Baidu Baike lists it as a Qidian xuanhuan novel; Webnovel shelves the English translation, credited to Nyoi-Bo Studio on the novel page, under Sci-fi and marks it Completed.

Is Super Gene worth reading? The first three chapters

We read chapters 1 to 3 on Webnovel on October 22. The premise arrives fast. Humans tried teleportation and landed in God's Sanctuary, a world where "a machine gun in this world was not even as useful as a steel knife." Eat the flesh of its creatures and you gain geno points; enough geno points and your body evolves and your lifespan grows. Kill one and you may also gain its beast soul, which can fight for you or become armor or a weapon.

Han Sen can't afford even the cheapest beast soul and knows only the beginner martial arts everyone learns at school, so after three months he's still eating beetles by a creek. Chapter 1 shows his stats the way the voice in his head shows them:

He's had zero points from "more than thirty black beetles in a row." Then a golden one climbs out of the water: a sacred-blood creature, the last of the four creature types chapter 2 lists, worth sacred geno points and a beast soul of the kind chapter 2 calls "without any doubt the best." Inside it is a black crystal. In chapter 3 he feeds the crystal to a caged, dying animal; a day later it has bitten through an iron bar and come back as a stronger, primitive creature. That's the engine, as Han Sen guesses it: the crystal makes creatures evolve, so he can grow his own better food. By the end of the chapter the beetle's beast soul has wrapped him in gold armor that the narration compares to the gold cloth of the Golden Saints.

The numbers make it readable. Every meal is a line of system text and a counter. Webnovel reviewer littlefrench liked that "there is a system but everyone has access to it," so Han Sen's edge is the crystal and his nerve, not a private cheat window.

It's funny about him. Chapter 2's backstory is why the whole shelter avoids him: on his first day he stabbed a giant white wolf unicorn in the backside, and the unicorn was Qin Xuan, "the most powerful woman in Steel Armor Shelter," in beast-soul form. His nickname since then is "Ass Freak," and she has declared anyone who spends time with him her enemy. It gives the early arc a lone-hunter shape that fits the eat-and-grow loop.

Is Super Gene worth reading past the first Sanctuary?

Length. The English edition runs past three thousand chapters, and only the first 39 are free on Webnovel; after that it's coins or Fast Pass. Plan where you'll stop before you start.

The loop. Readers who went far describe the same arc again and again. On r/noveltranslations, u/PowerOnline liked "the first 400 or 500 chaps but after 1k, its just the same plot over and over." u/thetruekyara said "The first sanctuary was great but once he left it started to go down hill." In the thread that asked this article's question, u/Danstryker answered "Nope not worth it. Repetitive as hell."

A hero who's good at everything. u/nssg94 put the main complaint plainly: "When MC becomes the best at everything for no apparent reason, shit gets boring fast." Webnovel reviewer Devil called the plot one that "includes stupid tricks and plot armour."

Not everyone minds. u/Sable-Keech, at chapter 1000, wrote: "It's like junk food I can skim over for hours on end." And u/legalink "enjoyed super gene for about 1500-2000 chapters" before it "became too much."

What to read instead

If the opening hooks you, Super Gene is worth reading through the first Sanctuary; then reassess. If you want the same author with fewer complaints, readers point to Let Me Game in Peace: u/mbahsur0 called it "much much better than Super Gene," and u/Valcua said it "is great too."

If you want sci-fi progression with a short, strong first stretch, our Swallowed Star review covers a novel that measures power in kilograms and meters per second. If you want the cheat to be the joke, the Library of Heaven's Path review is the same day's other pick, and our system novel explainer maps the wider genre.

How we checked this

On October 22, 2026 we read chapters 1 to 3 of Super Gene on Webnovel, went through the novel page and its reader reviews, and checked the full table of contents for locked chapters. We read the Baidu Baike entry and four r/noveltranslations threads about the novel. We haven't read past chapter 3, so everything about the later Sanctuaries and the repetition comes from the readers quoted, and most of those posts are several years old.
