Verdict: Read the opening teacher arc for the comedy; it's complete at 2,270 chapters, and readers who went further say the face-slapping loop repeats long before the end.

The short Library of Heaven's Path review: read it while Zhang Xuan is still a teacher. Heng Sao Tian Ya's 2016 novel opens with a fraud who has to fake expertise to keep his job, and the cheat that saves him is a very good joke. Readers who went past the academy say the joke barely changes, and the novel is very long. Take the opening, then decide.

The novel is Library of Heaven's Path (天道图书馆, Tiandao Tushuguan) by Heng Sao Tian Ya (横扫天涯). Baidu Baike files it as xuanhuan and dates its Qidian run from November 1, 2016; it's complete in English on Webnovel, where the novel page credits StarveCleric and Daoist6fubtiW as translators.

What we read: chapters 1 to 5

We read the first five chapters on Webnovel on October 22. Chapter 1 sets up the con. Zhang Xuan was "an ordinary librarian in a high school" who wakes up in the body of the weakest teacher at Hongtian Academy, a man who once taught a student so badly that the student's cultivation went berserk, and who "received the very first zero score in the entire history of the academy" on the Teacher Qualification Examination. The academy's ultimatum: sign one student this term or lose the job. Seventeen freshmen have already run.

So he lies. A girl named Wang Ying wanders in looking for the star teacher, Lu Xun, and Zhang Xuan talks her into signing with him using fortune-teller patter: "Teachers are just like shoes; what is important is whether it fits or not!" He praises her legs; she tells him they're injured, and he swerves without blinking: "only through destruction will there be rebirth!" The moment she hesitates, he cuts a small wound in her hand for the blood oath, and she wonders whether he had the dagger ready beforehand.

Only then does the title arrive: a palace in his head labelled Library of Heaven's Path, full of books he can't touch. Chapter 2 makes him pay for the morning. A rival, Cao Xiong, introduces him to freshmen as "a man who created history" for that zero, and Wang Ying's family servant tries to pull her out.

What works

The cheat lands at the right moment. In chapter 3 Cao Xiong challenges him to a duel of pointers: each teacher corrects the other's student, so Cao Xiong coaches Wang Ying and Zhang Xuan coaches Cao's student Liu Yang, and the bigger improvement wins. If Zhang Xuan loses, Wang Ying goes to Cao; if Cao loses, Liu Yang becomes Zhang Xuan's student. Zhang Xuan can't see a single flaw in Liu Yang's punching routine. Then the library hands him a book with the student's name on it:

In chapter 4 he picks the last flaw, tells the student to punch with his left hand, and the rock pillar that read 62 kg now reads 123 kg. By the end of the chapter the rule is set: anyone who performs a skill in front of him gets a book of flaws. It's clean, and it's funny because Zhang Xuan is still bluffing about everything else.

Bluffing as a character trait. Chapter 5 brings Zhao Ya, the City Lord's daughter, who comes to expose him. He makes her sweep the room and scrub the toilets before he'll accept her, and the first flaw in her library book is her temper: "her personality is rash and she is easily angered." Webnovel reviewer AuthorWiz put the appeal well: "This story's strong point is its humor and reactions."

Good-natured face-slapping. On r/noveltranslations, u/ScatterbrainedFool called it "much more good-natured a book" than most, where the hero "accidentally gives innocent side character a mid-life crisis." If you've read our system novels list, this is the comedy end of it.

What it costs you

The loop. What we read already shows the pattern: doubt, library, stunned crowd, a bit of face-slapping. Readers who went further say it never breaks. Webnovel reviewer Danguico, who read to the latest chapter available at the time, described the whole novel as a circle: "someone understimate him - MC doesn't know a thing about the profession - use the library" and back again. u/Do_Not_Go_In_There put it as "'I propose something crazy' 'But that's crazy?' -2 minutes later - 'It worked, you're a genius, please take me as a student!'"

Instant mastery. Webnovel reviewer Sasha complained that once the book starts "bringing in tea, painting, alchemy, beast taming etc. Anything new that shows up you bet his book will get him to grandmaster almost instantly." On Reddit, u/TartarosHero remembered a true-or-false use of the library that "was so criminally underutilized."

Length and pace. Reviewer nirleka counted "in 300 chapters we get 1,5 month of the main character life." u/Rylth called it "a guilty pleasure novel" with "more chapters than there should be that you can completely skip." On the ending, u/ZantetsukenX, who enjoyed most of it, wrote: "As is tradition, the ending is meh."

Paywall. Webnovel opens chapters 1 to 80 for free; from chapter 81 every chapter is locked behind coins or Fast Pass.

Library of Heaven's Path Review: Who Should Read It

Read it if you want a system story where the cheat is a punchline. It also sits at the top of our xianxia with system mechanics list because the premise is so clean. The free chapters are enough to see whether the joke works for you.

Stop when you've had enough of the formula. u/bubzlight said "when he's still a teacher is the best part," and u/VortexMagus found it "a lot less interesting a few hundred chapters in." Skip it if you want a plot that builds; if you're new to the label on the cover, our system novel explainer covers what to expect.

How we checked this

For this Library of Heaven's Path review, on October 22, 2026 we read chapters 1 to 5 on Webnovel, went through the novel page and its reader reviews, and checked the full table of contents for locked chapters. We read the Baidu Baike entry for the Chinese original and four r/noveltranslations threads. We haven't read past chapter 5, so everything about the later arcs, the pacing and the ending comes from the readers quoted, and most of those reviews are several years old.
