Swallowed Star Review: Read the Earth Arc, Then Decide
Swallowed Star measures everything: punches in kilograms, sprints in meters per second, a family's future in one bigger apartment. On Earth, that's thrilling.
out of 10
Verdict: Read it for the Earth arc, a poor kid chasing the Fighter rank in kilograms and meters per second. Readers say the space half turns into familiar cultivation.

The short Swallowed Star review: read the Earth arc. I Eat Tomatoes' 2010 novel opens on a ruined planet where a poor high schooler measures his future in kilograms and meters per second, and that opening is as clean a hook as the genre has. What comes after, in space, is where readers split, and the English translation has its own history. Decide at the end of the Earth arc.

The novel is Swallowed Star (吞噬星空, Tunshi Xingkong). Wikipedia dates its Qidian run to 2010-2012, and it's complete in English on Webnovel.

What we read: chapters 1 to 5
We read the first five chapters on Webnovel on October 22. Chapter 1 sets the scale in one line: at Zhi-An's 3rd high school, "in the 5000 students, only three are able to achieve the title of 'Martial Arts Elite Student'." Luo Feng is one of them, and the only one without a rich family. Exams are a month away, and he has a crush on a girl named Xu Xin that he has decided to bury until he reaches the next rank, Fighter.
Chapter 2 gives him his reason. His family of four lives in one room and a living room on the 32nd floor of a 36-floor rental with no elevator. His younger brother, Luo Hua, uses a wheelchair, and their parents sleep on the sofa:

That's a better motive than revenge or destiny, and it works. Then the book stops to explain itself. Luo Hua quizzes his brother for an exam, and the quiz is the world's backstory: an R-type virus in 2013, a deadlier airborne mutation called the RR virus in January 2015, a death toll that cut the world's population "by nearly 2 billion," survivors who came out stronger, and animals that came out stronger still. In chapter 3 the history keeps going: nuclear strikes that killed only the monsters inside the blast radius while the radiation bred worse ones, six major base cities in China, a United Earth Federation.
Chapter 4 is where the book's real personality shows. Luo Feng sprints to a tutoring job at 15 meters per second, earns "100 dollars per hour" teaching basics because his rank makes him worth it, and does the math on his father's wages. Then he goes to the Dojo of Limits, "the largest dojo on earth created by the strongest fighter 'Hong'," to test his punch.
What works
Progress you can count. Chapter 5 opens with Luo Feng doing arithmetic on himself:

No system window, no realm names: a speed, a weight, and a threshold. A senior at the dojo punches a test machine a couple of dozen times in a row and every number beats Luo Feng's best. It makes the power ladder easy to read, because you always know exactly how far he has to go.
A secret engine. The same chapter reveals Luo Feng's headaches. Twice in his life, at 8 and 12, the pain sent him into a coma, and each time he woke up stronger. He wants to push his pulse high enough to trigger another one, and no amount of exercise gets it there. It's the first hint the book has a bigger story than exams.
A clear world. Webnovel reviewer Lighting_Breeze summed up the shape: "It starts in a post-apocalyptc earth and it develops in a solid wuxia sci-fi story." The base cities, the monster wilderness and the rank tests are easy to hold in your head.
What it costs you
The translation's history. The English edition shows its age. Chapter 2 has the stock market's "Bafeite" and "Pulaisi" left as raw transliterations, and a dojo senior tells Luo Feng in chapter 5 that he's "only 19 this year, or 18 right now." The older reader reviews on Webnovel are about something bigger: a change of translator partway through. RebelTheEditor wrote that "the names of fundemental parts of the story have changed"; GeenIdee asked why "primal city leader" became "castellan." We read only the opening, so we can't tell you how the later chapters read today.
Exposition. The quiz in chapters 2 and 3 is an infodump with a framing device. It's well organized, but it's a history lecture.
The second half. Readers who went further agree the book changes when it leaves Earth. Webnovel reviewer Javachip loved "the earth part of this story so very much ! the universe part is a bit slow but still interesting." NappatheSaiyan said it starts from "a science background at first but quickly devolves into the nonsense of 'understanding the laws of things'." On r/noveltranslations, u/Daoist_Blue_Sky filed it under sci-fi cultivation, "glorified cultivation novels, like Swallowed Star," where "you might see a random spaceship here and there."
Romance and paywall. Flashhhh, otherwise a fan, called the love interest "forced and out of place." And Webnovel unlocks only chapters 1 to 40 for free; from chapter 41 on, it's coins or Fast Pass.
Swallowed Star Review: Who Should Read It
Read it if you liked Coiling Dragon, also by I Eat Tomatoes; Webnovel reviewer Icharris ranked Swallowed Star "tied with coiling dragon" among I Eat Tomatoes' novels. u/brooklyn600 remembered the two as early breakout translations together. It's also the right book if you watched the donghua and want the full Earth story behind it, or if you like progression you can measure.
Skip it if you want science fiction that stays science. The opening is sci-fi in setting, but Luo Feng climbs through a martial arts dojo, and readers say the cosmic half leans further toward cultivation. If that's still your genre, our xianxia beginner's guide maps where it sits.
How we checked this
For this Swallowed Star review, on October 22, 2026 we read chapters 1 to 5 on Webnovel, went through the novel page and the full table of contents (counting locked chapters), and read the reader reviews on that page. We also read the English Wikipedia article on the novel and two r/noveltranslations threads that mention it. We haven't read past chapter 5, so everything about the space arcs and the later translation comes from the readers quoted, and several of those Webnovel reviews are years old.
