Best Completed Chinese Web Novels, Ranked by Chapter 1

Eight finished Wuxiaworld serials, ranked after reading how each one starts. Er Gen's two take the top spots.

9 min readLast reviewed By Daniel P. Cross

Verdict: Start with I Shall Seal the Heavens or A Will Eternal; try Desolate Era if you want a calmer reincarnation story, and leave Spirit Realm for last.

If you want a finished Chinese web novel and don't know where to start, start with I Shall Seal the Heavens, then A Will Eternal. We opened all eight of the completed Wuxiaworld serials below on October 13, 2026, read at least the first chapter of each (five or six chapters for the ones we've reviewed in full), and ranked them by how well they start. Every one is marked Completed, and every one lets you read about 50 chapters free before you decide.

How We Ranked the Best Completed Chinese Web Novels

The ranking is ours, and it's about openings. A 1,600-chapter serial lives or dies on whether the first few chapters make you want the next thousand, so we read them and asked one question: would we keep going? Listing scores, review counts and chapter totals come from each Wuxiaworld page as we saw it on October 13. All eight show the same free timer, "2 Free Chapters Every 23 Hrs," once the free run ends.

We tested the free line by opening chapter 50 and chapter 51 of each; 51 came up as a locked "(Teaser)" everywhere except Desolate Era, which numbers by book and stays open through Book 3.

Best Completed Chinese Web Novels, Ranked

1. I Shall Seal the Heavens

A broke scholar who's failed the imperial exams three years running gets kidnapped into a sect so run-down it has to abduct its servants. By chapter 5 he's out-haggled the con man running the treasure hall's junk shelf and given away a pill that would've got him killed, to the woman who kidnapped him. It's the funniest opening we've read on Wuxiaworld, and the jokes come from Meng Hao's head rather than from dumb enemies. Our full I Shall Seal the Heavens review covers chapters 1 to 5.

2. A Will Eternal

Chapter 1 has the best first gag on this list. Bai Xiaochun leaves his village to find an immortal, the villagers wave him off with fake tears, and the moment he's out of sight they bang gongs and cheer "The weasel... is finally gone!" He then climbs a hill carrying four axes and six machetes because he's scared of a rustle in a bush. It's the same author as our number one, the highest listing score here at 92, and the shortest at 1,321 chapter entries. The listing says it connects to I Shall Seal the Heavens but "can be read alone." We put it second only because ISSTH's comedy has more bite. See our A Will Eternal review.

3. Desolate Era

This opening made us a little sad, in a good way. Ji Ning was sick his whole life on Earth, made a fortune online anyway, gave all of it to sick children, and died at eighteen. In the underworld an official reading the Book of Life and Death turns out to be from Earth too ("back in the era of the Sui and Tang dynasties"), and sends him to be reborn in the Heaven Realm. It's calmer and kinder than the rest of the list. A Reddit tier-list post by juksted calls it "just an OG novel," one of the first 10 they read.

4. The Great Ruler

Mu Chen has already failed once, somewhere nobody else from his region was even allowed to go, and the book makes you wait to learn why. That mystery pulls harder than the academy rivalry around it. We read six chapters for our Great Ruler review and gave it a 7: the hook works, the translation shows its seams.

5. Battle Through the Heavens

Opening of Battle Through the Heavens Chapter 1, Genius No More, on Wuxiaworld: Xiao Yan's 3rd stage result on the Magical Testing Monument

The template half the genre copied. Chapter 1 is a public test: "Xiao Yan, Dou Zhi Li, 3rd stage! Rank: Low!" The crowd sneers at the former prodigy who lost his power three years ago, a 14-year-old clanmate scores 7th stage, and Xiao Xun Er scores 9th and walks over to stand by him anyway. It's effective, and you can see why it spawned a donghua. The translation is the problem: chapter 1 ends in translator notes like "I think" and "not sure why the wording is changed." Our novel vs donghua comparison covers the adaptation.

6. Martial World

A chapter 0 prologue about a wounded saintess blowing up 10,000 pursuers with a magic cube, then chapter 1 settles into the classic setup: Lin Ming, fifteen, third-grade talent, punching an ironwood tree until his knuckles bleed because his childhood sweetheart picked the rich kid's academy. The rich kid offers him "A thousand gold taels!" to go away, and Lin Ming answers with a speech about "the heart of a martial artist." It's earnest and a bit stiff, and at 2,276 chapters it's the longest here. Readers who were there loved it: StoneFortress, in the same tier-list thread, writes "Man, I enjoyed Martial World a lot back then."

7. The Charm of Soul Pets

It's a grim premise, and one we hadn't met before. Chu Mu, fifteen, is a kidnapped former young master on an island where children are forced into soul pacts with "Nightmares," evil soul pets that eat their owner's soul unless the child keeps getting stronger than the pet. The guards at the gate call him "already a dead man." If you want creature-bonding with real stakes rather than cute monsters, this is it; we'd rank it higher if chapter 1 didn't spend so long on exposition.

8. Spirit Realm

Qin Lie spends chapter 1 as a blank-eyed "fool" whose grandfather, a spirit-artifact repairer, died two years ago, while other kids gossip about whether his promised engagement to the family's Second Miss still counts. There's a mystery in there. But the first page describes one girl as "well endowed" and then keeps returning to her chest, the listing carries a Mature tag, and it has the lowest score here at 55 from 39 reviews. Try it last, if at all.

What Long-Time Readers Say

The tier-list thread we quoted above is the best quick read on how these books aged. It's limited to completed novels, and ISSTH, Desolate Era and Martial World all come up.

  • StoneFortress: "Coiling Dragon was an experience, for me only ISSTH can compare."
  • new_account_wh0_dis: "Webnovels are just pulp. Action packed and fun but the forced release schedule, length, etc means that we arent exactly comparing all time novels here, which is fine."

That second comment is the right frame for this whole list. These are long, fast, pulpy serials; the useful question is which one's opening gets you to chapter 50, and that's what we ranked.

How Long the Finish Line Is

Once the free run ends, the timer is 2 chapters every 23 hours on all eight. Our arithmetic for the two we'd start with: I Shall Seal the Heavens has 1,570 chapters left after the free 50, about 752 days at that rate; A Will Eternal has 1,271, about 609 days. Martial World's 2,225 remaining entries would take about 1,066 days. If those numbers put you off, our guide to whether Wuxiaworld is worth paying for runs the subscription maths.

Er Gen wrote both of our top two. His Wikipedia biography cites the China Writers Association on the different emphasis of each book, "playful elements in I Shall Seal the Heavens" and "humor in A Will Eternal," which matches what we read. For cultivation-only picks, see the best completed xianxia novels; for genre labels, xianxia vs xuanhuan.

Our Take: Where We'd Start

We'd start with I Shall Seal the Heavens, and go to A Will Eternal next if the humour works for you; they share an author and a universe, and both openings are funny on their own terms. Pick Desolate Era if you'd rather have a gentler, stranger reincarnation story. The Great Ruler and Battle Through the Heavens are for readers who want the classic underdog-at-the-academy shape. We'd leave Spirit Realm until you've run out of the others.

How We Checked This

For this list of the best completed Chinese web novels we opened all eight Wuxiaworld listings on October 13, 2026, read chapter 1 of each (chapters 0 and 1 for Martial World, chapters 1 to 5 or 6 for I Shall Seal the Heavens and The Great Ruler), tested chapters 50 and 51 of each for the free line, and read the Reddit thread's top comments and Er Gen's Wikipedia page. Stars of Chaos, a print series that was on an earlier version of this page, is gone: we haven't read it, and a page count can't be ranked against a chapter-1 test.
