Reverend Insanity Character Guide: Who's Who, Spoiler-Safe

If you're back in Reverend Insanity and the names have blurred, start with this: Fang Yuan and Fang Zheng are twins, Fang Yuan is the elder, and they were orphaned at three and raised by an aunt and uncle who wanted their inheritance. The Gu Yue name covers the whole clan, so it tells you almost nothing about family. And Bai Ning Bing isn't Gu Yue at all; he's the Bai clan prodigy the elders are already afraid of in chapter 1. We reread chapters 1 to 5 on Webnovel on October 13, 2026 to build this list, and everything below stays inside those chapters unless we say otherwise.

Reverend Insanity Cast Quick Reference: Chapters 1 to 5

The clan leader and the academy elder appear in chapters 1, 4 and 5 by title only, so we haven't named them here. Write them down by title too; it's how the opening introduces them.

Fang Yuan, the Reverend Insanity Narrator You Shouldn't Trust

Chapter 1 opens at his death: a coalition of righteous sects has him surrounded for refining the Spring Autumn Cicada, and he detonates himself rather than hand it over. Chapter 2 wakes him up as a teenager in Gu Yue Village on Qing Mao Mountain, a mortal again but with 500 years of memories. "The present me has not even opened my Primeval Sea," he thinks, and the plan follows: borrow the clan's resources, reach Rank Three, leave.

The trap for returning readers is that he talks like a narrator. In chapter 3 he decides his brother "was just an outsider, he could easily give him up anytime." That's his view, not the book's verdict on Fang Zheng. When you resume a chapter, ask what Fang Yuan knows and what he wants as two separate questions.

Fang Zheng: Same Face, Different Brother

We'd fix this mix-up first, because it's the easiest one. Chapter 2 introduces him at the window: "It's you huh, my twin little brother." They "were born from the same womb at the same time," and people around the village introduce Fang Zheng as "Fang Yuan's younger brother." The surname is shared; "Yuan" and "Zheng" are the only part of the name that tells you who's on the page.

Fang Yuan's memories also tell you where their story is going: in his first life, the younger brother tested A grade and he tested C. Wikipedia's plot summary confirms the ceremony repeats that verdict. If that's a spoiler for you, you've read past chapter 5 already.

The Household and the Elders

The aunt and uncle never get names in these chapters, and they don't need them. Chapter 2 says they "grabbed hold of the inheritance" left by the twins' parents. Shen Cui, the servant, matters because her mother, Matron Shen, runs the household for them.

Chapter 4 brings in the institution. Over a hundred 15-year-olds cross an underground river into a field of moon orchids, and the number of steps each one manages sets their talent grade. Two elders watch from the dark: horse-faced Gu Yue Mo Chen, whose grandson Mo Bei tests B grade, and red-haired Gu Yue Chi Lian, whose grandson Chi Chen answers with 36 steps. Fang Yuan remembers that Chi Chen cheated. File both elders under "clan politics," not "family."

Bai Ning Bing: The Rival From Another Clan

He turns up in the elders' gossip before the ceremony even starts. In chapter 1 they worry that "the Bai and Xiong Clans spawn geniuses yearly," and that Bai Ning Bing reached Third Rank "in two years." Wikipedia adds that he's born with the Northern Dark Ice Soul constitution, "one of the setting's ten extreme physiques." The Webnovel catalog shows how central he becomes: chapters 140 to 142 are titled "Gu Yue Qing Shu vs Bai Ning Bing."

Step-by-Step: Getting Back Into the Book

1. Find your chapter in the official catalog. It lists 2,334 chapters across volumes; note the number and title before you look anything up.
2. Sort the scene first. Family (twins, aunt and uncle), clan (elders, clan leader) or outsider (Bai clan)?
3. Split the name. "Gu Yue" is the clan, "Fang" is the branch, the last part is the person.
4. Check this table, then stop. Wiki pages for these characters open with later events.

Our Take

Readers argue about whether the names are the problem. In an r/noveltranslations thread about lookalike names, edgyboi1704 wrote: "Reverend Insanity is such an offender of this." Another reader, bdnskjynx, answered: "Never had a problem with reverend insanity though." We're closer to the second camp for the opening. Chapters 1 to 5 give you one family, two feuding elders and one outsider, and the titles do the sorting for you. The confusion comes later, when the cast leaves Qing Mao Mountain.

How We Checked This

On October 13, 2026 we read chapters 1 to 5 on Webnovel and opened the book's catalog, plus the Reddit thread quoted above. Character details beyond chapter 5 come from Wikipedia's Reverend Insanity article, saved October 8. The previous version of this page cited Webnovel chapter URLs that now return a 404 and a chapter 105 title that doesn't match the catalog, so we removed those claims (details in our sources file).
