Coiling Dragon Donghua vs Novel: Where Season 1 Ends

The finale squeezes an ambush and an interrogation the book keeps apart into one night, so the book is where Linley's revenge arc really begins.

Verdict: Finished episode 20? Open Wuxiaworld at Book 6, Chapter 10. By our estimate the season stops around chapter 12 of Book 6, about 124 of the novel's 807 chapters, and no season 2 has been announced.

The Coiling Dragon donghua ended at episode 20, with Linley's father buried and Duke Patterson naming the king as the man behind his mother's abduction. By our estimate, that's around chapter 12 of Book 6 in I Eat Tomatoes' novel. If you've finished the show and want the next part of the story, open Wuxiaworld at Book 6, Chapter 10, "Captured," and read on. We found no season 2 announcement, so for now the book is the only way to find out what happens next.

That chapter number is our estimate, and we'll show where it comes from below. If you're deciding whether to read the novel at all, our Coiling Dragon review is the place to start. This page is for viewers who have already seen the show.

How the Coiling Dragon Donghua Was Released

Tencent announced the adaptation at its 2022 animation festival and premiered it on April 30, 2026, with three episodes at once. After that it went weekly on Thursdays until episode 12 on July 2. Then Tencent dropped episodes 13 to 20 together on July 9, which is why the r/Donghua thread the next day was titled "Coiling Dragon All Eps Released, Season 1 over."

That's the whole season. Tencent Video's page reads 全20集 · 会员看全集, "20 episodes in all, members watch the full run," and gives the show 8.2. Baidu Baike lists it at 20 episodes, and MyAnimeList says "Finished Airing" with no sequel among its related entries. People searching for "Coiling Dragon episode 21" won't find one: as of October 24 we found no season 2 announcement.

Where the Coiling Dragon Donghua Leaves You in the Novel

Our estimate is Book 6, "The Road to Revenge," around chapters 11 and 12. That's entry 124 on Wuxiaworld, about 15 percent of the novel. Tencent doesn't publish a chapter map, so we built this one ourselves: we read episode 20's official English subtitles line by line against the free chapter previews for Book 6.

The episode opens on the same ground as early Book 6: the funeral of Linley's father, Hogg, where Patterson arrives as a guest and the king makes Hogg a Count after his death. In the book's chapter 4, Linley already knows Patterson's men took his mother "years ago" and have now killed his father too. He skips the funeral banquet and stays kneeling in the hall. Delia, who stays behind at Wushan in the book, comes to say goodbye in the show: her family wants her back in the Yulan Empire.

The last story beat before the credits is Patterson's confession. "I handed her over to Clyde. I was only following orders," he says in the subtitles. The book reaches the same point across chapters 11 and 12. In the chapter 11 preview, Linley is in Dragonform, black scales and dark golden eyes, with his tail wrapped around Patterson, who begs and asks, "You are from another plane?" The chapter 12 preview opens with Patterson dying, and then Linley says it out loud: "Clayde. So the man behind this event was Clayde."

So why start at chapter 10 and not 13? Because the show doesn't cover these chapters in the same order the book does, so chapter 10 gives you some margin. The book's chapter 10, "Captured," opens at the Debs clan's engagement party with Alice in the room, and by our match chapter 13 is the first scene the show hasn't reached: Clayde has seized Patterson's housekeeper and summons Linley to the palace at night. Reading from chapter 10 may repeat a little of what you've seen, and it makes sure you don't skip anything.

The episode's main story closes on two lines: "He was my only brother" and "So, it was the Dark Church." Then, after more than two minutes with no dialogue in the subtitle track, someone who has "finally escaped" says they won't be "as unlucky as I was over 5,000 years ago." That's a setup for a season nobody has announced.

Where the Donghua and the Novel Really Differ

Episode 20 squeezes two of the book's nights into one. In the novel, assassins using a darkness-style spell, the "Corrosive Fog," attack Linley at the king's estate in chapter 7 and kill eighteen Radiant Church knights. Chapter 8 says outright that the attack spoiled that night's planned meeting with Patterson, and Linley only gets Patterson alone a few chapters later. In the show, Linley invites Patterson to Springwater Garden, asks about "a pregnant woman" taken 14 years ago, the dark-magic assassins burst in ("This is dark magic." "Dark Requiem."), and Patterson confesses once the fight is over. It's tidier television, and it loses a detail we liked in the book: Linley wasn't hurt at all and cut his own arm so nobody would know how strong he was.

The church choice is flipped. In Book 6, chapter 5, Linley's path runs through the Radiant Church: Cardinal Guillermo says Clayde will confer a writ of nobility and a manor, and Cardinal Lampson says he wants "our Radiant Church" to have another Saint-level fighter within fifty years. In the show, Linley tells the church's men he would rather serve King Clyde, even though the Holy Church is far more powerful (光明教廷 in the Chinese subtitle track, the same church Wuxiaworld calls Radiant). The king then names him Chief Court Mage and Count in his father's place. Keep the names straight when you switch: the show's Clyde is the book's Clayde, its "The Awakening" is the book's "Awakening From the Dream," and Springwater Garden is the Hot Springs Garden.

Alice gets a softer backstory. Viewers arguing about her in July talk about a drunk father who beat her and a family debt her fiancé paid off. Readers who finished the book say that's new. "I actually read the whole novel," wrote u/Few_Pack_5199. "If I remember correctly, in the novel she didn't leave linley because of her debt." u/YTRomanIsAPenguin put it more bluntly: "She was even worse in the novel (there was no dad gambling problems iirc." Both say they're going from memory, but they agree. We'd treat the show's Alice as a gentler rewrite and let the book decide what you think of her.

Viewers who knew the book noticed differences early on. After the three-episode premiere, u/dhildebran90 wrote that "they aren't going to stick with the novel's story, already noticed quite a few differences in the 1st 3 eps." The July drop didn't help: "episode 13 was just BAD," said u/Wunder-Bra. Not everyone blamed the studio. u/Bogzy called it "a very good adaptation as in i like how the show looks but with a very boring source material." We'd weigh the first two more heavily: a show that changes things from episode 1 and dumps its last eight episodes in one day is a highlight reel, and the book is where the story is told in full.

Where to Watch the Coiling Dragon Donghua in English

On Tencent Video only episode 1 has no VIP tag; episodes 2 to 20 are for members. The easier route is Tencent's own YouTube channel, Tencent Video-ANIMATION. It posted episode 1 with English subtitles on April 30 (more than 166,000 views by October 24) and episode 20 on September 10, the same day as a five-hour compilation of all twenty episodes with an English subtitle track. The descriptions still point you to a WeTV membership for members' episodes, but when we checked, those uploads were public.

The novel sits on Wuxiaworld: completed, translated by RWX and licensed from Yuewen. Logged out, you see a preview of every chapter; the free tier unlocks two full chapters every 23 hours. The rest of Book 6 from chapter 10 is 23 chapters, which takes about eleven days at that rate.

What Wuxiaworld's free tier gets you and when paying makes sense.

Our Take

Read the novel now. With no season 2 announced, Book 6 is the only place to find out what Linley does about Clayde. And the book's version of these chapters is better: Patterson's capture is its own scene, and you see Linley hiding how strong he is. Watch the YouTube compilation if you want the early books in five hours: the Ernst Institute, the sculpture, the auction. Just don't count on the show to tell you who Alice was. The catch is the free tier. Two chapters a day gets you through Book 6 in under two weeks, but the 683 chapters after the show's end point would take close to eleven months at that rate. If you're still reading after Book 6, that's when paying for chapters starts to make sense.

How We Checked This

On October 24, 2026 we read the free previews Wuxiaworld shows logged out for 53 Coiling Dragon chapters (Book 4, chapters 1 to 4; Book 5, chapters 1 to 17; and all 32 chapters of Book 6). We then read the official English subtitles of episode 20, line by line, against Book 6, chapters 1 to 13. The rest of each chapter is locked, so the chapter match rests on those previews and the episode's subtitles. We also opened Tencent Video's episode page, the Baidu Baike and MyAnimeList entries, TVmaze's episode dates and the Wuxiaworld series page and table of contents. With yt-dlp we checked which official YouTube uploads play without a membership, and we read three r/Donghua threads. We haven't watched the episodes; what happens in them comes from the subtitles and the viewers quoted above.
