That makes him an unusual lead for the genre, and the page adds that the novel is "much more comedic and light-hearted than Er Gen's" earlier books. Deathblade translated it for Wuxiaworld. It's also the shortest commitment here, which makes it a cheap test of whether you like the genre at all.

We read chapter 1 on October 17, 2026, and it's the best pitch for this pick. A whole village sees Bai Xiaochun off to find the immortals, all sad faces, then bangs gongs the moment he's out of sight: "Justice from the heavens! The weasel... is finally gone!" 2. I Shall Seal the Heavens

Wuxiaworld sums it up as "the story of the young scholar Meng Hao, who gets forcibly recruited into a sect of immortal cultivators." In that world "the strong prey on the weak", and Meng Hao must adapt to survive. The synopsis promises "both comedy and drama", which makes it a natural step up from A Will Eternal in the same author's voice. It also has its own reader fans: in the same Reddit thread, u/TempAugy wrote, "First novel I finished was I shall seal the heavens."

We read chapter 1 on October 17 too. Meng Hao has failed the Imperial exams three years running, owes Steward Zhou three pieces of silver, and is sitting on a mountain feeling sorry for himself. He spends two hours finding a vine long enough to rescue some boys stuck in a cliff crevice, and the woman who put them there grabs him as well, flies them all to a sect and assigns them as servants. His first thought on landing: "If the work is for Immortals, the pay must be good." That's the Er Gen hero in one line, more calculating than Bai Xiaochun and just as funny.

3. A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality

Wikipedia dates the serial to 2008 through 2013 on Qidian and notes that in November 2010 it took first place in Qidian's monthly ticket list. Wuxiaworld's page bills it as "Ranked 1st out of the thousands of novels on Qidian by recommendations." The synopsis follows Han Li, "a commoner by birth" with "mediocre aptitude", who must "avoid the notice of those who may do him harm." It's the heaviest lift on this list, so read it once you know you enjoy slow, careful progression. 4. Renegade Immortal

The novel is about him breaking through that limit. Wikipedia says it ran on Qidian from 2009 to 2012 and calls it "Er Gen's breakthrough work". Wuxiaworld carries a translator notice titled "Renegade Immortal has ended", so the full story is available in English. It suits readers who want an underdog rather than a lead who is overpowered from the first page.

5. Reverend Insanity

Author: Gu Zhen Ren · Chapters: 2,334 · Status: Labelled Completed on Webnovel, no ending

This is the outlier. Webnovel's synopsis calls it "A story of a villain, Fang Yuan who was reborn 500 years into the past", and describes him as "Ruthless and amoral". The cultivation runs on Gu, "magical creatures of the world". The official English translation on Webnovel covers every published chapter. Wikipedia adds the catch: "The published text stops immediately before its final battle, and no ending has ever been written." The novel was removed from Chinese platforms in 2019.

Start with A Will Eternal. Its first chapter is a comedy sketch with a cultivation novel attached, and if Bai Xiaochun's cowardice wins you over you'll have the patience for everything else here. I Shall Seal the Heavens is the natural second book; Meng Hao's chapter 1 has the same humour with a sharper, greedier lead. Leave Reverend Insanity for last, not because it's weak but because a beginner deserves to know before chapter one that the story stops before its final battle. Record of a Mortal's Journey is the one to save for when you already love the genre's slow grind.
